What a magical season 1985 was for the Bears. I was 19 then and we watched all those games at my friend Brian's house, his parents didn't mind if we drank. It was extra special when Madden and Summerall were the announcers, and that happened quite a bit that season because they were the #1 announcer team for the network and were always assigned to the best game, and the Bears were popular. I lost touch with Brian after I graduated from college, he died tragically 15 years ago on this very day I did get word in time to make his funeral, RIP Brian. Also RIP John Madden. Madden was a great teacher. Every time I watched a game he was commenting on, he taught me something about the game. I watched whoever had the ball; he watched all 22 players at once. And on the replay he would point out a block that created the lane for the runner, or some other key thing away from the ball that the rest of us missed. . He always seemed to know why a flag was thrown before the ref told us. He knew very well that his knowledge of football far exceeded that of most fans, but he never talked down to us.

Madden and Summerall always had such great chemistry together. Always fun to hear them talking about the game.

*Those of us of the Baby Boomer Generation were so privileged to have been able to watch the game of Football during this era, with the truly perfect team of Summerall & Madden guiding us through the journey. That was long before the NFL took a wrong turn, losing many of Her fans in the process, myself included. For nearly sixty years I was a devoted Chicago Bears fan, which wasn't an easy thing to do lol, they rarely won a game, they rarely came close to winning the Division Title, forget about a Super Bowl! But, then something truly amazing happened during '84-'85 season, all those years of saying, "Maybe next year", changed.. when all the right ingredients came together to create the now famous (& infamous to the other teams) THE '85 Chicago 🐻 BEARS! The game was at it's very zenith, not only for the Bears, but all of American Football... it was magical, almost spiritual in it's effect! Sadly, as every 'Boomer' generation football fan has seen, that's all gone now. That's why I treasure these old games, especially my good ole Chicago Bears! Thank you 'Punky Q.B'., 'The Fridge', 'Sweetness' and all of the others that made these memories possible. It will never happen again, we will never see another team quite like The '85 Bears.*

Madden was the alltime best. People gave him a lot of flack, but he called it like it was. No one better in the Biz than John

Most people have a hard time explaining a complicated situation without further confusing the audience, but John Madden gave clear, straight forward, and easy to understand explanations. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame of Hall of Famers!

Under the Lights Madden's a great story teller & in football his whole life, so has unlimited stories. He faced Payton nearly 10 years earlier & was a fan from Day 1, he liked to watch really good line play & he knew the city of Chicago was starving for a champion, so '85 Bears gave him a lot of material.
