For me, this is the best song of Ed, it hits so freaking hard. When we're young, we meet people, then they become our friends, and then we think that it's going to last forever. I think what's beautiful about the song is that he doesn't glorify the town and his past. He simply recognizes it and is willing to embrace the broken people around him -- since we are all broken. I feel like this is not actually a song to youth but to young adults. Those just old enough to have left home a few years ago and grow up a bit. Like after a year or two at university. A song to look back on 'the good old days' and realize that while all of them have developed in different directions your friends are still your friends and are likely to stay that forever. But that might be my interpretation only because I'm just that age :D
