They asked Ernest Hemingway once if he can write a whole story with only one phrase and he did it. In my eyes, the same just happened with Ed and the line "I wish that heaven had visiting hours." Literally one sentence but it packs so much emotion and expresses such a universal sentiment. What a brilliant songwriter.

Ed wrote and dedicated this song to his friend and mentor Micheal Gundinski who unexpectedly died in March, a legendary Australian record label founder and music producer, Ed always said he was like a father figure to him. He performed at Michael's state funeral in Melbourne and afterward wrote this song. A beautiful song and tribute to his friend.

Thank you for your art and talent to heal grief. I would so like to hug you and thank you so much! My husband was proud and such a gentleman. He worked for the Federal Reserve Bank J10 in Kansas City, Mo. he was a spectacular man that everyone loved. Cancer took his life 3-1/2 months ago. Lyrics- [Verse 1] I wish that heaven had visiting hours So I could just show up and bring good news That she's getting older and I wish that you'd met her The things that she'll learn from me, I got them all from you [Chorus] Can I just stay a while and we'll put all the world to rights? The little ones will grow and I'll still drink your favourite wine And soon, they're going to close, but I'll see you another day So much has changed since you've been away [Verse 2] Well, I wish that heaven had visiting hours So I could just swing by and ask your advice What would you do in my situation? I haven't a clue how I'd even raise them What would you do? 'Cause you always do what's right [Chorus] Can we just talk a while until my worries disappear? I'd tell you that I'm scared of turning out a failure You'd say, "Remember that the answer's in the love that we create" So much has changed since you've been away [Verse 3] I wish that heaven had visiting hours And I would ask them if I could take you home But I know what they'd say, that it's for the best So I would live life the way you taught me And make it on my own [Chorus] And I will close the door, but I will open up my heart And everyone I love will know exactly who you are 'Cause this is not goodbye, it is just 'til we meet again So much has changed since you've been away

My father passed in 2019 too. I keep thinking about how I won't have him to dance with me at my wedding. How he won't see his first grand child when I have children, and so many other firsts. I miss watching movies with him when I would visit, and how we would get about a new action film, and the dinners together how he would laugh at me chewing on my steak bone, and other memories like that.

My partner died on July 30th. A couple weeks later, I saw a notification that Ed Sheeran had a new song and listened immediately, having zero idea what the song was about. As soon as I heard the first line I was in tears. It felt like a message from the universe at the moment I needed it most. Since, I’ve listened more times than I can count - it’s been a light in my darkest moments, and there have been many. “I will close the door but I will open up my heart, and everyone I love will know exactly who you are.” Thank you Ed for this beautiful song, and thank you Levi for your beautiful soul. I lost my Dad earlier this year. Oh my, this song. Ed’s voice. Ed’s melodies. Ed’s words. They all just reached in and tapped into so much that I think and feel right now. Thank you Ed, you are a special human being and your talent is so rare. You just manage to make connections with so many people at such deep levels, time and time again. I miss you so much Dad and will love you forever and how I wish that heaven had visiting hours… 😢💔

My grandfather died very unexpectedly on 23 May this year. At that time, I was 39 weeks pregnant with my first child. On 4 June, my daughter Nina was born. She was given Maurice as her middle name, a tribute to my grandfather. A few weeks later, I got to know this song and the first sentences gave me goosebumps, tears ran down my cheeks and at the same time I got particularly warm inside.

We said goodbye to our father last year. My three siblings and I don’t have a day that passes without wishing we could speak to him just for a few moments. To have him suddenly taken from us was horrific. I now have two young nephews and the whole family teaches them about what a warm, loving and generous man their granddad was. This song pretty much sums up the place we are now. It’s beautiful.

@@basicallybeya4076 I know that feeling all too well, sometimes a song hits like a truck and you've got no idea why. Ed songs tend to be really good at plucking at my heartstrings. We're both coping well with the loss of a parent, just in certain life moments it comes back pretty hard and in my sister's case becoming a mother, really makes her miss her own. It's a gap no-one can really fill, I'm happy she has a very lovely mother in law that lives nearby.

The little ones will grow and I'll still drink your favourite wine And soon, they're going to close, but I'll see you another day So much has changed since you've been away Well, I wish that heaven Had visiting hours So I could just swing by And ask your advice What would you do in my situation? I haven't a clue how I'd even raise them What would you do? 'Cause you always do what's right Can we just talk a while until my worries disappear? I'd tell you that I'm scared of turning out a failure He'd say, "Remember that the answer's in the love that we create" So much has changed since you've been away I wish that heaven Had visiting hours And I would ask them If I could take you home But I know what they'd say That it's for the best So I would live life the way you told me And make it on my own And I will close the door, but I will open up my heart And everyone I love will know exactly who you are 'Cause this is not goodbye, it is just 'til we meet again So much has changed since you've been away

Lost my dad when I was 12 and here I am still missing him every single day till I am 21. It's been not easy for growing up without a father figure in my life. I have so many unanswered questions to ask to him. So many stories to share. I only got into a middle school back then when he left me to a better place, and now I am already in my final year of university. I'm always on my peak of missing him whenever I face hardship and go through a mental breakdown. I feel like if he were still here, at least I could see him smiling and being proud of his last, little daughter. First few months of the year are always hard for me cause he passed away in January and his birthday is in March. Sometimes I get sad for no reason, and after thinking about it deeply, maybe I just miss him too much when a new year is starting. It feels weird. And sad. Dad, I miss you so much. I just want you to be happy up there. See you very soon. With love, daddy's forever little girl

Oh my goodness. Your story hit so close to home I just started bawling reading it. I lost my dad to cancer when I just started secondary school, or in your country it's considered middle school. I am his youngest daughter, too. Not a single day went by without missing him. I know that he's in a better place, and I keep him close to my heart. I am 21 now, and so much has happened since he's gone. I struggled so much during the earlier years when he was gone. It's been 8 years since, I'm in a much better place now, and I always hoped that he would be proud of me watching over me, wherever he may be. I wish you all the best in your endeavours. I'm sure your dad must be proud of you. Because if I think about it, I'm certain my dad would be so proud of who I have become too!

"Visiting Hours" I wish that heaven had visiting hours So I could just show up and bring the news That she's getting older and I wish that you'd met her The things that she'll learn from me, I got them all from you Can I stay a while and we'll put all the world to rights? The little ones will grow and I'll still drink your favourite wine And soon they're going to close but I'll see you another day So much has changed since you been away I wish that heaven had visiting hours So I could just swing by and ask your advice What would you do in my situation? I haven't a clue how I'd even raise them What would you do? 'Cause you always do what's right Can we just talk a while until my worries disappear? I'd tell you that I'm scared of turning out a failure You'd say remember that the answer in the love that we create So much has changed since you been away I wish that heaven had visiting hours And I would ask them if I could take you home But I know what they'd say, that it's for the best So I will live life the way you taught me And make it on my own And I will close the door but I will open up my heart And everyone I love will know exactly who you are 'Cause this is not goodbye, it is just till we meet again So much has changed since you been away
