"In this video we going to talk about treasury stock 😒" Hahaha all jokes aside thanks a lot, your videos this semester helped me more than my teacher and his tutors combined. Much appreciated

I noticed that when Apple repurchases shares their shares outstanding doesn’t really change, but their retained earnings account changes. Interesting.

hello, really thank you for your efforts....but i have question in regard to treasury stock. what will be the journal entry or the effect on the acc equation when the corporation sells the treasury stock at the below cost( cost when they bought) ? and the same thing for retiring the treasury stock ??? thank you
@lisperry-montgomery20967 жыл бұрын
I think the answer to this question is in the video. "A firm cannot ever recognize a gain or a loss when dealing with its own stock." So, in other words, the book value of the stock is irrelevant--the FMV of the stock would be used in the journal entries and assets and equity would both be reduced. (I know you probably don't really need the answer to this question anymore but someone might.)

I am looking at my textbook and it says that you debit cash for the amount you sold shares for (below cost), debit Paid-in from Treasury Stock (reducing contra-equity acct.) by the difference of what the shares would have sold for at cost, and credit Treasury Stock account for total sale of what it would have been in sale was made at cost.

hussain noor i think you have to debit retained earnings along with the treasury stocks if treasury stocks were reissued below its par value :) the only time the cost of treasury stocks dont affect the gain or loss is when the company repurchased it. :)

How is it recorded, under GAAP, if the share holder returns his shares? Par value? or FMV? The shares were surrendered for no consideration.

If treasury stocks are not gain or loss and the company will have to spend money buying back those stocks where is it recorded when they spend that money to buy back the stock?

I'm curious too, is this classified as an expense or an investment in order to better eps?
