Really nice to see a video about astronomy that doesn't cover telescopes. You don't need a lot of money to get into science, and while people like to watch review videos, they're not learning about science that way.

These are very useful intros for anyone early on in astronomy. Often the most overlooked tutorial that beginners need is a really good discussion of eyepieces, especially advice on what to avoid, where it's worthwhile to spend extra and why you need various pieces.

A binocular is really just two relatively small, low-magnification, wide-field-of-view telescopes paired together for use with both eyes simultaneously. This is the deepest way to look at and understand what they are. Some folks even do this with much larger telescopes or use special accessories to view through a single larger telescope with both eyes. You know all of this, of course, but I'm mentioning this for anyone who might read this.

I still use a 7x35 binocular that has been around for years, even before I started observing, and it has the typical non-coated lenses and undersized Porro prisms that form the diamond-shaped exit pupils and dim the view. It still works fine in my suburban sky (on the good side of that), and it has helped me learn the sky over the years, but I know I'm missing out on some things when I look through the 6x30 finder on my main telescope. This finder is very basic and cheap, but it does have at least a simple magnesium fluoride coating, and of course it doesn't have a Porro prism. Despite the binocular offering 36% greater light-gathering potential with its larger aperture, I can readily and easily tell that I can see more and dimmer stars or other objects in my finder than in my binocular. This means the coatings (or lack thereof) and prisms (or lack thereof) make a pretty major difference.
@rbrtck
@rbrtck Жыл бұрын
An additional word on coatings, especially on binocular optics: some binoculars are famous for having highly reflective coatings, such as the ones that reflect red light pretty brightly. As common sense would suggest, these binoculars are losing more light than ones that have coatings that reflect dimly (regardless of the color), as they should. The dim reflections (often limited to a narrow range of the spectrum) mean that less light is lost than with normal, brighter glass reflections, while the bright colored reflections are inferior because they're reflecting quite a bit of light instead of transmitting it through. I don't know why coatings like this are made. Perhaps they're based on mil-spec binoculars that for military reasons block (filter) certain wavelengths from entering, and maybe they're the same, but whether they are or not, this is not good for astronomy. Of course, there are astronomical filters that work the same way, but those are designed for certain specific purposes relevant to astronomy (visual or photographic) rather than the military. The bottom line is that binoculars should have the nice dim (and usually colored) reflections, not bright ones.

Some years back I mounted a pair of small travel binoculars to a tripod, I was able to see Jupiter and a few of its moons. It wasnt the best image but you could still tell some of the moons were fully lit and some were not. You could tell it was in motion even though it appeared still to me. It was honestly incredible. Something about it to see that on my own of my own will, its like it proved to me that things can be proven. Like ok yeah it really is out there doing its thing and we only have to look to see it

Glad I found your channel Ed, I'll soon be buying my first telescope since I was a kid (who owned one of those silly department store models many decades ago) and your videos are very informative. I'm already doing some astrophotography with my Nikon and star tracker with really nice results but looking forward to getting serious with more advanced optics and and an equatorial mount. I would like to see you talk soon about what we have available to us today to help us learn that we didn't have when we were young - software, smartphone apps and the internet. There are vast resources out there now that we can use to understand the night sky and help us identify and find objects using a smartphone and free computer software like Stellarium, not to mention all the terrific forums and YT channels dedicated to astronomy and astrophotography. I still like and purchase books and star charts but I'm amazed at what the kids today have at their disposal that we didn't have. I'm a new subscriber and looking forward to more excellent content!

Hey Sandra, welcome to the astrophotography world. Since I'm a beginner myself, I can only help from my limited experience but since you asked... My star tracker is the SkyWatcher Star Adventurer Pro. It works great for tracking the right ascension of stars, moon and planets when polar aligned accurately. Get a polar align app for your smartphone to help with that. Also get a planetarium app like Stellarium, Star Walk or Night Sky all of which are awesome tools. I have been using my 70-200mm telephoto with a 1.7x teleconverter (340mm max focal length) on my Nikon D600 with very good results. This would be considered "wide-field" equipment, good for shooting the larger objects such as the Andromeda galaxy, the Pleiades cluster, and many nebulae. Wide angle lenses are good for full sky shots of the milky way core (spring and summer skies in the northern hemisphere) especially if you can get out of town away from city light pollution. Another popular star tracker is the iOptron SkyTracker Pro. I strongly advise you to check out the websites and videos of Trevor Jones (astrobackyard.com) and Peter Zelinka for tons of information and tutorials on using a star tracker with camera and lens. Peter has been using a 150-600mm telephoto zoom with his Nikon D750 on the iOptron tracker for most of his astrophotography. His work is excellent. There is much to learn in this hobby but thankfully there are many experts (including Ed Ting right here) who can provide a wealth of information to get you going. All the best to you in your college aspirations!

I'm looking forward to part 2 of this series. I hope you also will do something on Astrophotography, as that's where my interest lies. I have some gear, but a couple of years ago, I ran into job loss, eventual loss of my home, and it just went downhill from there. All my astrophotography gear, what's left of it, is in storage, and I hope by springtime to be in a position where I can have it back, replace the stuff I'm missing, and get out under the stars once again. In the meantime, I'm going to keep on watching as I expect to learn a lot from you.

If you dont mind a little bit of chromatic abberation... an Explore scientific AR102 is nice :)... and not expensive.... there are models with tripods too. Start with a good refracter around 3 to 4 inch.) ( a 3 inch (80mm), theyre light, and great to travel with. will be a little cheaper... if you wanna pay a little more.... go for an ED doublet /:) like the fantadtic Orion ed 80 (though that model is very barebones) if you want a low cost goto scope (electronic) The nexstar from celestron is great, they do a range of sizes. Whatever you do dont go for a huge long want if you want to start deep space imaging... its a big learning curve....

What an amazing explanation. Learnt more about binoculars here than the optics course of entire school curriculum. I wish more teachers could explain the practical aspects like you rather than drawing ray diagrams on auto-pilot. ♥️

YES! This is exactly what I want. There are videos out there on it, but I feel like his video would be much more detailed and useful. The other videos just give vague notions of what you are doing.

for star chart and planisphere, it depends on your geographic location correct? I live near the equator (Malaysia). are the ones you recommended above still valid?

One more thing id like to add. Have you ever purchased any 60mm SharpStar ED or AstroTech ED Apo Refractors? There are a few different versions. I believe they are all similarly made; FPL-53 ED glass, dual focuser, doublet etc. I purchased High Point Scientifics version the Aperatura 60ED not that long ago, and its a great little scope for the price. I think even William Optics may have there own take on it aswell. Needless to say its a wide field beast for astrophotography and would recommend anyone looking for a smaller sized, quality telescope. Plus the colors on these babies are outta this world literally! Thanks again for all that you do Ed! Take care and clear skies! ✌😁🔭

Thanks for another great video Ed. I have been looking into larger binoculars like the Oberwerks XL series which are 100mm and 120mm. What are your thoughts on big binoculars like those?

Got a pair of Celestron Cometron 7x50. I don't know if it is my problem or binocular's problem but I have double vision when looking at something. The image is the same in both left and right ocular, both focused, but I dont see it as one. But once again, great video with very helpful information ;)

People vary in their ability to "marry" images in binoculars and binoviewers. Keep trying, your brain may train itself!

You can always get binoviewers. For a telescope. Anyone will enjoy it more with even an ST80. I've gotten one of the Meade 80s for $65.00.

So Ed, I've tried to order the book Binocular Astronomy. I'm wanting to jump in soon and may have around $200 to play with. If I can get a better experience from a small aperture (80 to 100) scope from Orion or Celestron than if I spent $200 on a quality Binoculars , I would think that should be my play. What say you ?

Great video and some great pointers for starting up! I have a pair of Asahi Pentax 7x42 wide field 11 degree binos that were designed for night sky viewing. If I'm too lazy to haul out my dob during imaging sessions, those are my fall backs. The Celestron Sky Master series comes with a nifty tripod mount that will mount to most photography tripods and that is pretty handy for keeping steady at longer magnifications. It's pretty flimsy but works well enough to get started until you get a parallelogram. Enjoying your videos!
