Just caught the comment on the clarity and fogged appearance of the transparencies - it is all down to the finish of the mould, the clear parts are highly polished, the 'fogged' areas are given a very slight rough surface. This has the effect of obscuring the clarity of the clear parts, gives you a perfect way of working out what is window and what is airframe/fuselage, super bit of moulding though, looks amazing. The only issue I would have with this lovely kit is where to put it! I am gonna need a museum or something . . .

Thank you for telling me! Makes more sense now! Very impressive as you said. Indeed maybe a museum or two will be needed to store this one🤣

Awesome build! One small constructive nitpick is that the stains on the upper wing surface is actually from oil leakage, not exhaust. All of the exhaust was routed through the superchargers beneath the nacelles, while airflow pushed leaking oil (if a Wright Cyclone radial ever stops leaking oil, something is seriously wrong with it) through the upper cowl flaps. It would then streak back over the top of the wing until it reached the hot air discharge vents for the intercoolers (the vents on the upper wing surface that are often mistaken for engine exhaust), where it would be split between them. Another detail is that many (but not all) B-17s exhibited an airflow quirk in which air over the port wing flowed straight back, but air over the starboard wing would hook inwards toward the fuselage, which would be reflected in the oil stains. This quirk was not universal, and photos exist of Forts with and without it, but it’s a cool detail. Tt

What a fantastic job you've done here! The last B-17 I put together was Revelle B-17 Memphis Belle back in 1964. This one is much larger and more detail. My dad was a B-17 pilot in the south pacific he flew the E and F model only. The only small thing I see is the model sits at a slightly steeper stance and I think that is because they didn't take into consideration of weight being on the main landing gear which would have made it spot on for a true stance. I wonder how a guy could trim the landing gear to make it look like it had some more weight on it? Maybe filing down the bottom of the tires? I think if I buy this kit I might try that. It would be an expensive mistake if I messed up. Keep up the great work!

Very good but for future reference B17 cockpits were never painted with zinc chromate primer. They were either a dull dark green or a bronze green. The floor was wood with or without black non slip mats. Plenty of references online. As for the decals, one advantage of the carrier film issue is that you can actually remove the carrier film after application, with the careful use of a scalpel. It makes for a painted on look.

I have the HK 1/48 kit in my stash...so you're saying the Eduart kit you just built is the HK 1/48, but re-boxed by Eduard and some goodies thrown in? I think one thing that could be done with any B-17 kit is to add some patches to it where the mechanics have repaired flak damage. It would be a great detail if the manufacturers could pick up on that. I like how you made plain olive drab look interesting. That must have taken a weekend to paint the tonal variations. One last thing, just looking at the decals, this looks like a kit where a lot of them could have been painted on if the modeler had the ability to create the stencils.

There are lots of refrence photos online for the interior of a B-17. If you can see the fuselage ribbing ( as here ) it needs to be aluminium, any green in these areas would be from sound proof padding which almost always obscured the ribbing entirely. The floor in the nose was wood from top to bottom, bomb bay would be aluminium or neutral grey depending on which Fort you are building.

Eduard decals have that issue a lot now, since they changed to the removable decal film type. Something happens where the carrier film bonds to the protective paper. Either there not being left long enough when printed for it to cure, or if they get hot and it stick’s.

I think you have the 'new' Eduard decals that allow the carrier film to be peeled off after application so that you don't have the unsightly carrier film to try and hide on the finished model. Maybe the film stuck too well to the protective paper (maybe kept somewhere that wasn't dry?) but Eduard would surely have supplied a replacement sheet

@baanibarnes97113 ай бұрын
Weird issue with your decal varnish, never heard of that occurring before but a little tip for you - if you have a damaged or missing varnish on your decals, you can hand paint varnish over said decal. A couple of coats of hand brushed acrylic varnish left to dry properly will do the job. I have done this in the past where I have had kits (Trumpeter!) with excessively thin varnish which caused the decal to fall apart in the water dish, very disconcerting. Varnishing the rest saved them though, give it a try on the kit decals you have.
