We definitely had a few military commander types(with a touch of sadism) in my school - but certainly not most of the staff. I was lucky that in my school two two vice principals( I'm Canadian) took half the students each - and I had the non sadist for mine. However, in terms of staff and student interaction and caring - the schools they feature in this series are certainly well above average, quite exceptional in that sense. I remember we had this one secretary who was responsible for tracking student attendance and lateness as well - and she was like Filch from Hogwarts in her not even slightly concealed contempt for us all(the students).

Exam pressure is immense. The difficulty of exams and what relies on the exams is unreal. You can no longer go into a job that isn't minimum wage without a degree. To get to that you need 3 A levels at (a good, top 10 uni) A* A A. To get to that you need (for a good sixth form where you have a chance of those A level results) 8+ GCSEs, 5 of which are 9-7 (A** A* or A). To do that you need a good school who put stupid amounts of pressure on students. To do that you need to do well in year 6 SATs where you revise for months aged 10/11 where if you do well you have a harder exam called the 11+. Not mentioning homework, exam timetables (9 exams in science alone!) as well as constantly being told how your life depends on all this.

I remember what a struggle it was to get boys to do the school plays and musicals.
