One question as a total newb, perhaps someone can enlighten me. Having watched some of the rally, I was left wondering: Why don’t they just follow each other’s tracks? Or perhaps they do ? Or perhaps it is better to follow your map rather than trust the competitor in front knew where they were going ? How do they get around this point ?
@arish-
@arish- 2 жыл бұрын
The commonly taken route can be an easy but not fastest path. It's a matter of the co-driver/navigator and driver choosing the best route for themselves. A lot of them do follow the same tracks taken by previous drivers and Sainz also stated the advantage of going last but as we saw this year itself, sometimes a rider can get lost and then an entire group of riders got lost. Hope you enjoy Dakar!
@ingerasulffs
@ingerasulffs 2 жыл бұрын
The bikes go first, with last day's winner going first, position that comes with higher risk of getting lost. Cars can't always follow the bikes though. Amateur drivers/riders can't always follow the same route as professional ones and it's really easy to lose a track in the desert. So overall, there are many different routs taken, many wrong ones too.
@a2falcone
@a2falcone 2 жыл бұрын
They do. But doing so, they can make the same mistakes as the ones who were before. This is also the reason why winning a stage involves a risk: the winner of a stage starts first in the next stage, meaning there won't be any tracks to follow. This affects bikers mostly, since they usually go first.
@philipmarr7325
@philipmarr7325 2 жыл бұрын
In years past Jimmy Lewis was a top bike rider and was particularly good at navigating. When he was leading “opening the road”, he was known to lay false tracks to trick riders behind him.
@afthefragile
@afthefragile 2 жыл бұрын
The guy who finished first needs to start first on the next stage, so then he'll have no tracks to follow. Other drivers do try to follow the leader but then they need to trust the driver in front knows what they're doing and if the driver in front gets lost, so does the driver behind. A lot of time bikers team up to try to navigate the stage together, especially when it comes to the more difficult terrain. But at the same time they are also competing against one another and have to fight to find the advantage.

Same as the previous year and still no mention of scoring and times. Still unclear whether overall is actually overall or who’s competing against who. As I mentioned the best part of a race like the TDF is the races within the race, you’d be well served to make it known about those if any, and highlight them.

Anyone know why the roadbook is only given 20 min before start now? I believe in the past riders could study it before bed the previous day and it allowed good navigators to really highlight and prepare for the route. This year it seems to be just a few min
@cherrycheshire7555
@cherrycheshire7555 2 жыл бұрын
Some teams had some smart people behind the scenes with maps and tools and then calculated faster routes, they then put that information back to their drivers and "updated" the roadbooks for an advantage.

@@cherrycheshire7555 no way! That is dirty pool! I guess they had to do something about it then...but is 20 min enough really? I feel for the bikes opening the road and a roadbook they didnt even really get to highlight or see for so short and no wonder so many of them are goin off course!
