This is the combined video of Her-An's 6 part interview with Edward Frenkel, professor of mathematics at University of California, Berkeley and world famous author of the book "Love and Math", conducted on location in Mr.Frenkel's office in UC Berkeley.
Questions:
0:11
Your book is titled as "Love and Math". Could you share with us the reason for putting Love before Math, despite being a professor of Mathematics?
2:11
"Love is infinite, whereas Mathematics is finite" is a quote from your lectures. Would you elaborate more on this viewpoint?
8:47
As a mathematician, you know how invaluable "Rationality" is. On the other hand, we also know you see "Love" precious as well. Is it possible to make a connection between Love and Math in this sense?
14:52
When evaluated based on Rationality and Faith, Singularity Movement appears to be much closer to a religion than science. Would you share your opinion on this matter?
16:32
Ray Kurzweil's book, published in 1999, was titled "The Age of Spiritual Machines". Though there were already concepts like "Thinking Machines" and "Machine Intelligence", the concept of "Spiritual Machines" was unique to Kurzweil. Through the perspective of "Love and Math", would you share your view of this concept of "Spiritual Machines"?
28:34
There is a lot of discussion on Quantum Computers. There is also D-Wave, a Quantum Computer company founded by Geordie Rose and invested in by Google. Would you share your opinion concerning quantum computers?
37:59
How would you evaluate the process of Artificial Intelligence research which is mostly engineering based?
How do you see the place of other academic disciplines besides engineering such as social sciences in projects like these which have the potential to transform humans?
44:33
Do you think that an AI can be developed that can pass the Turing Test? If so, can this AI be considered the true equivalent of the human mind?
54:43
We see that China and Russia are closely following behind USA in Artificial Intelligence Research. What do you attribute Russia's successful competitive stance against USA to?
01:09:05
Do you see the possibility of technology developers turning into a ruling elite when AI inseparably integrates into human lives?
01:15:09
Do you have a message for Her-An's followers?

I can't believe how brilliant of a storyteller he is. He is shamelessly vocal about his beliefs and that is beautiful and raw.

I completely agree, Ray Kurzweil's ideas and books should not be regarded as serious science. I like the term "singularians" ... very good. I enjoyed "Love and Math" (on audio) and will order the printed version because it is really excellent! Thank you for posting this interview.

Dear Ed, what a beautiful mind you have. Although this is firmly within my social media filter bubble, like many KZbinrs below in the comments, this interview is one on the positive side of the balance of rationales for filter bubbles. In fact, it is a massive outlier! I feel sorry for people who describe themselves as rationalists, who cannot grok Prof. Frenkel's thoughts. Sadly, I am a rationalist by nature, but I thank humanity every time I come across thinkers like Frenkel. From the opposite side of the culture aisle I have a few friends who follow the Baha'i Faith who have similar thoughts and philosophy about the complementarity of science + religion. I dislike the word "religion" here, so please just note that means a lot more than what people see as "organized religion" It includes Satori, Zen, as well as naturalistic simple wonder at the beauty of nature, despite all the chaos and violence in our social world. You should think about it though: the violence we do to each other as humans is nothing compared to the violence to "nature" built-in to nature, such as Black Holes and thermodynamic "heat" deaths, etc. By most natural standards humans are quite peaceful! And I agree with Frenkel, especially when he hints that appreciating mathematics helps one to see more beauty in the universe and beyond than would otherwise be possible if one is ignorant of mathematics. Although he never says that explicitly, I think some degree of benign mathematical snobbery is justified!!! It would be nice is every human being had these insights so that such snobbery would be more like common culture.

stick to the math, dude. One MIGHT ASSUME a connection between quantum effects and conscious phenomena, but claiming there is one and calling non-believers ignorant at this point is ignorance itself.
