Glenda Jackson - still my MP, by a whisker. Something haunting about the script after all. EP with thanks.

Really fascinating clips from this play (or rather, television adaptation from the play), which I've only recently become aware of. It is spoken of as "experimental" and even "surreal," but aside from the built-in soliloquies it seems quite naturalistic. I'd like to find the full version. O'Neill was such a brilliant, multifaceted writer, endlessly inventive. Thank you for posting, and whetting the appetite for more.

Pardon while I have a strange interlude: Like the bell-bottomed pants of yesteryear…this style of theater has outlived its usefulness. What strange sounds this play makes, like the mystic sounds of toilets flushing. Well…at least Groucho got it right!

You'd better steer clear of Shakespeare, then. His reputation is based on things like this. I don't think you'd have enough snotty "observations" and toilet references to get you through - or maybe you would. No offense intended, of course. 🐧

@@TheStockwell - My friend I love the theater and miss it tremendously. Covid shutdowns have not only killed many people but much of the arts as well. However, this kind of theater has long ago exceeded its expiration date. “Excuse me while I have a strange interlude” isn’t just Grouco’s famous line, I have heard it used for years to mock pretentious self-centeredness. If you presented this play today in the bay area (California), it would be greeted with howling laughter in the beginning…then a quick run to the exits to escape the unintentional comedy disaster. Mind you, these are not Trump hillbillies we’re talking about, these are the intelligencia which support the arts. DON’T EVER COMPARE THIS STEAMING PILE OF DOGGIE-DOO WITH THE WORK OF THE BARD!
