In 1979 Sir Edward Hulton bought this Sunderland flying boat, actually a converted Sandringham, with the idea to restore it to Imperial Airways flying boat standard and begin commercial flights. This is the story as shown on tv back in 1990'ish. Happy viewing.

Having read Peter Smith's fantastic book on ML814; I can see now the difficulties there were between Edward Hulton and his staff of volunteers. Hats off to him for saving a piece of British aviation history; but what a terrible attitude he had and what poor management. I got the impression that he really bit off more than he could chew with this project and to want to use it commercially was a very brave if not foolish idea. Far better to have kept the aircraft on the private category and used occasionally at air shows. I visited a few years ago the fantastic flying boat museum at Foynes in Ireland and this perhaps should have been ML814's final resting place? Instead the aircraft was sold to Kermit Weeks and now resides in Florida; perhaps not a bad outcome in some ways? I wonder how much it was sold for and did Hulton get a return on his 'investment'?

Kermit would have paid a fair price for it, probably not nearly as much as Hulton spent already though, but its got a good home now.
