My thought is that the Inventor - many years ago - built all of that so he could make all kinds of food and then, whenever there was a fair or festival going on down below in (what is now) Suburbia, he would load it all onto a cart and journey down the mountain to sell it all; then he would use the moneys for upkeep of the mansion or to build more machines. But... then, he grew old, the fairs slowly faded as times changed, he couldn't make the journey any more...

The Inventor, a man of great intelligence and keen engineering skills, atop the dreary castle that looms over suburbia and it's pastel horizons, has everything he wanted. Machines that can make the best cookies with love and care, in every shape and size imaginable. Even machines to cut his greens and assemble a nice salad. But not a legacy. The machines may rust and falter, but not a son. Yet, the Inventor thought, once upon a Christmastime, if he could build machines, why not a son... A son named Edward?

Most actors, once they're older, just kind of read through their lines. They're still believable, but they can't contribute much emotion. But Vincent is great in this scene. He isn't like that at all. He's clearly still getting into it just as much as he did in the 50's and 60's and giving it his all, despite his age and health problems. His simple and small performance is what really makes this movie for me.
