Correction, Mighty Sparrow was not, never a song writer. His early calypso was written primarily by Rocky McCollin, he was a Technical Operator at Radio 730 on the AM band, in those days there was no FM band. There also was radio Redifusion. After Rocky died, he had slew of writer. One included Winsford Devine and Earl Rodney, steel pan tuner, pan music arranger. In the late 70's to early 80's, after releasing his Carnival album, one of the tunes on that particular album titled, 'Steelband Music was by High court order could not be performed by Sparrow or on the radio stations or in public, because of copyright issues. There is a book written by Winsford Devine expounded on this problem. The very Earl Rodney advised and educated Winsford Devine on copyrighting music. In the early days of tent life many young, new and were shafted of their songs. When they audition for the upcoming season, and Sparrow decides that he wants their song, they were made to ride the bench, not appearing once on stage. The next year Sparrow would be singing their songs. Lord Shorty was also guilty of this, l know personally of a man he shafted , a guy from Indian Walk, Moruga, who also worked taxi Marabella to San Fernando. This guy left calypso immediately, bitter and disappointed 😢😢 Go find Winsford Devine book and read it. Gypsy stole, Mighty Tallish, song 'For Cane'. Preacher and a deceased calypsoian from St. Vincent was also guilty of that. A man named Nelson Caton, also wrote for Sparrow. Know the truth.

Sparrow is such a legendary calysonian! He paved the way for all these soca artists of today. I wish we could help people today to appreciate and honor the genius of these song writing/performers. Their brilliant story telling, use of double entendre, mastery of melody, rhythm and brass, and rich resonant voices. When I was at UVI, my music professor had come all the way from Australia to study the artistry of this very calysonian that we took for granted, "The Mighty Sparrow"! We need to find a way to properly honor them and share their brilliance with the world.

The Mighty Sparrow is in a class all its own. He is a one-man show. Master of lyrics and story-telling, which today calpyso seems to be forgotten art. Long ago, calysoes captured the international, regional and local issues of the day. Many of the songs are evergreen. Today, the soca artistes, sad to say sing nothing worth listening to - it's all about jam and wine in coarse, degrading language, not many of their lyrics are uplifting.

This is music, I've always been fascinated by his talent and storylines, as a kid I glued myself to the radio and tv whenever my Dad plays his music or when he plays on the radio. Never will anyone come close to his level of storytelling in Calypso music.
