So wierd, I was just talking to my local tackle dealer a week or so ago and he was telling me he used to go eel fishing in one of my local lakes years ago! He said , if caught, a large eel was the best fighting fish he had ever fished for. Great to see a new a more unusual fish Species fished on here.

A fascinating species. The mystery that surrounds them is part of their appeal. With the increased growth of most freshwater species due to warmer winters, eutrophication and the amount of high protein baits going into many waters, one would expect eels to have grown much bigger as well. There must be some big eels living happily unnoticed in some of those commercial waters that are vastly overstocked with small fish. That 11lb eel caught by a teenager in the 1970s must be the UK's longest standing record (other than the 64 lb salmon and maybe the burbot)! I am not sure how true it is, but I have read that big eels are never caught more than once, either because they learn to avoid angler's rigs or because they often die after capture. Is there any evidence of known repeat captures of big eels?

I am really ashamed, as when i was growing up on the banks of a Salmon and Sea Trout river we treated eels as basically vermin. I can remember days when I could scoop endless handfuls of elvers as they ascended the weir. I didn't know they had become endangered until a few years ago when I took my son to show him the elver run, It wasn't there - not a single one. Very very disheartening.

Im sure I'm not alone in loving and loathing eels in equal measures! I love them because of their incredible life cycle, and their evolutionary adaptations that, a wee bit like pike, their very little changed in millions of years as they haven't needed to. On the flip side, i hate them because, well, their eels! lol I am tempted to try and target the specimens though, as even little one fight like buggery on a light feeder rod! I only took up fishing again 4 years ago, (i fished from 8-17, i gave up when i discovered women and dope ;-)) i started on my local stretch of the trent, when i was asking for tips in the summer months, i was warned against using maggot or worm after dark....soon discovered why! 😁 thats when they come out to play!!

I was fishing a lake for carp simple hair rig with a boilie. The lake I was in I never knew there was eels in there my dad was speaking to some lad and he said there was 2 or 3 eels in the lake. An hour later alarms going off and its fighting hard so I’m thinking it’s a big carp. Next minute head comes up and it’s an eel. Made me laugh

Waters generally hold large mouth fish eating eels, or small mouthed worm eaters. No point dead-baiting of they're small mouthed. Both types grow big.

I find it hard to believe that a rare fish like the pollan is allowed to commercially fished for on Lough Neagh. All the rare whitefish species (like vendace and powan) are in decline in the UK. I have asked the question on commercial pollan fishing videos on here, but have not had a reply. I suppose I need to write to the Government or the Environment Agency in Northern Ireland to see how they justify it.
