Deutekom was essentially a dramatic coloratura soprano. She has been performing professionally for over three decades when this was filmed (her debut was in 1963). She sang everything from Fioridigi to Norma and from Abigaile to Turandot (!!!). Yet after all this, she managed to whip up the most delicate, subtle, precise coloratura, all with the most youthful timbre and ease of production. It makes one think that all those that are so pathologically obsessed with complaining about her technique may actually be wrong and that she was indeed one of the best of the 20th century.

Indeed she was although as you said she sang from coloratura to heavy dramatic and with 3 consistent registers so I would dare to define class her as Assoluta. She retired with an instrument that was barely in its prime, had it not been for poor health she could have gifted us another solid 10 years of amazing singing. Check her master class here on KZbin just how fresh and solid her instrument still was at the time of recording. Besides, her technique, well, she did it on and off with her own criteria which I never figured out. It did contribute to preserving her voice as the pressure is far less. Those who criticize her are probably the same who intentionally ignore, their diva’s wobble, poor diction, no low or middle registers, goat vibrato, lack of trill, transpositions, screamed or scooped high notes, stylistic transgressions and so on and so forth. I could never live without Deutekom’s recordings, I can’t say the same about many singers.

She was extraordinary, unique and with an incredible stamina, but her tone is girlish, and she didn't have powerful lows, very often omitted, so...dramatic? Assoluta? Her high notes are incredibly effortless, I've always considered her a leggero soprano

@@gianerajohn436 time will change after you die. Vincent van gogh was poor ...they did not like the way he painted. Christina has her own technic....people did not like it ...in 20 years she will be the best ever existed

Please, don;t be bothered by criticsm. Even the most famous personalities make their mistakes and have their faults. I think of all of them, maybe Mrs. Deutecom had the least of each..... Let me just remind you of Callas, who was supposed to have a superb technique.... So everything is realtive... and this lady is close to perfection...

I was fortunate enough to hear Deutukom at the Met as the Vespri Elena and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. Aside the spectacular singing, it was envigorating to witness someone taking such joy in sharing her art.

I really like this! And in the past I really haven't been too much of a fan. Mainly cuz of what's been called her "cluckoratura". But, I actually don't hear that here! She sounds wonderful! Think I will start listening more. Thanks for posting!

I think the cluck was just an unfortunate effect of recording the voice too close. I hear it here, but the room warms it up a ton. Her technique was just TOO clean - each note has a clear accent and center of pitch. Incredible =D

@@thomasgareaubaritone627 Yes I agree. But I don't really think microphone distance was the problem. Philips sound engineers are as good as the best in the world. What others call cluck I always heard as a sort of yodeling. What my ear hears more is the lack of legato line in the cluck that bothers me. Her early Verdi recordings show how she sang better, I think. But WOW! Voice production like this is rarely heard these days - that's why she was still vocally strong at 55!

@@Tkimba2 , dal vivo quei gagaga non erano cosi evidenti. Ho ascoltato 3 recite di Norma con Del Monaco, il piu' grande Pollione ed insuperato, e lei se l'e' messo sotto i piedi.Alla fine del trio del primo atto il Re sopracuto era cosi potente e timbrato che orchestra e solisti scomparivano e nel duetto secondo sparava pure un Mi ( povero Mario) Grande interprete tragica specie in ruoli difficili per ovvii motivi (Medea e Turandot per esempio). La Lucia all'Arena fu un evento. Un Cosi Fan Tutte a Roma da manuale. E aveva un volume impressionante e di una precisione millimetrica. Ciao Tomba 2.
