Whilst the river is in flood, you still have water coming down from Manchester so there is a ebb current running down outside of river -so a current is running down from Cammell Laird wall which can be quite strong - so the river is pushing the aft section of ship to Runcorn and ebb current sending to bow to New Brighton reason for bow hitting quay.

Could well be a contributory factor and appreciate your local knowledge. The approach looked all wrong leaving too much adjustment for the final manoeuvre. I assume there would have been a pilot on board and that the Master and pilot will have completed the necessary information exchange. Looks like the damage to the ship is minimal, but port authorities being port authorities will claim double the damage and add a bit on for their inconvenience.

Hello Mersey Shipping. What an amazing video. Loving the close-up shots of the bow before entering dock. What struck me, she turned so well mid-river but positioned herself too soon before entering the dock (I was thinking that before she hit the dock) , hence the mis-calculation when she came to enter the dock. There was an officer at the front of the bow, but was not there when he was really needed. Surely they could have seen what was happening on the bridge and prevented the collision. Would this be blamed on the pilot or the captain of the ship? Excellent Video. Thank you.
@merseyshipping44948 ай бұрын
Thank you. I'm not sure who would be to blame, captain or pilot. Seemed to be a lack of communication between the guy on the bow and the bridge. 👍

@@merseyshipping4494 I could hear the bowthruster working but with a 4m draft probably too little and too late. Takes a bit of skill to navigate with those currents. Power too which gives steerage but its a coaster really so not a fantastic response. Things happen unfortunately.

Well your hearing is obviously better than mine. I couldn’t hear what he said that caused the collision. Perhaps you could clarify.
@lawrencelarkin46706 ай бұрын
Just checked high water for that day was 13.05 at just under 9 metres which is a very strong tide, when you approach Alfred Pierhead you have to get your bow in as close as you can to the North side then lift your stern and drive her in as the effect of the strong flood is setting the stern to the South not forgetting there is two ends to a ship !... now if he had a stern tug fast aft he could possibly have held the stern up to the North against the flood which is still strong at this time just at the crucial time his bow was about to enter. Not the worse damage to a vessel but a dint to your pride and believe me it hurt's for while ! And just as a footnote for all the experts out there the two worse places to dock a ship on the Mersey are Bromborough Dock which has long been sealed up and the worse ever as anyone with knowledge of this river will tell you is without a doubt Alfred entrance especially with no stern tug.

We are guessing so, lack of communication between bridge and the guy on the bow. It's wasn't a strong tide so it's not that. 👍
