Usually flashing someone should be letting a lapped or slower car know you are coming through and for them to stick to there line so you don't lose as much time as you would battling. The number 5 mercedes though was doing a tactic where you get into someone's mirrors and flash your lights at them coming into a corner to try and distract them so you can make a mistake and they can gain the position.
