It can be pirated in full HD but I won't give links to torrent sites here. Use google and you will find it. I suggest you read the book instead or before watching this movie, because although it looks visually stunning but otherwise makes a mess of the story omitting a lot of things (a two hours long adaptation is too short even for rendering the first twelve chapters of Genji monogatari) and taking too many liberties with the book for my liking.
Can we talk about the animation for a second? Wow, this is one of the prettiest animation I’ve ever seen in my life, I love how it kind of resembles traditional ukiyo-e painting and everything is highly detailed. The movement are very graceful and elegant, very suitable for a story about heian royalty. I wish we could see more animation like this. I’m astonished that this was made pre-digital animation.

Genji monogatari is the oldest Japanese Novel written by a lady that served royal Queen and the story continued even after her death ie. her daughter did last parts. It's about a guy who gets laid or try to get laid with 13+ girls/womens. Genji was a illegitimate son of King of that period and was denied royal privilege. His mom was beautiful (low social status), thus he was born beautiful (handsome ?) And when goes to Palace he was not welcomed but he was able to steal heart of Queen (stepmom). They had affairs and some even believe that some offsprings of Kings were actually of Genji. (Who knows) But given the circumstances, that affairs can't be successful thus he goes on to get laid with bunch of different women and girls. He goes to remote place and brings little child so that he can raise her to become his ideal love ( stepmom ). But he dies before he could realize all of his twisted dreams. If the author hadn't died before story ended, the ending would have been very different and Genji could have gotten all of his lustful dream. I am like biggest fan of this novel and thr original author. Btw don't forget it was written 1000 years ago, thus Marrying a little girl was very much legal and moralized at that time. Heck even 20 years before , 13+ age girls could legally have sex with adults in japan. And also, it was written by Female as a bed time story for another Female, hence the Playboy nature of Main character, Genji.

I do understand why people find Genji Monogatari problematic and disgusting. But as a literature student, this story was written for almost 1000 years ago, the age where people still did not have any concept or knowledge about child-grooming and stuff, and is one of the first novel in the world. It may seem weird in this generation, I agree, but firstly we have to understand the time and context this story being set in. Also, this story can successfully reflex the japanese society back then and has so many things and messages to be interpreted. You can hate this work by its plot, but I still convince that it has some kind of a cultural value that I found very interesting.

I just translated your comment. I really thought it was a woman raising the girl:(
The story depicts in a very old Japan era, all of you saying the story is not good try to watch it. The story has more deep message than what you all think. I feel disgusted reading all of your comments tbh, also if you think this is a lesbian then I'm sorry. Now let me tell you some info about the story (some are spoilers): 1. During Japan's Heian era, men and women both wear make up and perfume to become attractive. 2. We have our own beliefs and cultures, Genji Monogatari is a story during Heian era and "Heian" means peace so this era does not involve war and conflicts instead, it involves love and peace. Also, Heian era is an era where people exchange a poetry. 3. Genji is a man who seeks for affection because his mom died at a very young age (I think at the age of three). While growing up, he doesn't know anymore what a mother's love is that's why he keeps on having sexual intercourse on many women (to fill up the hole in his heart=pain) 4. Yes, he had a relationship with his step-mother (named Miyasudokoro). Actually, Genji's father has a lot wives (which is common for the emperor to have many wives on the past) and Genji had a relationship with his step-mother because she looked like his mother (the biological). Since he grew up not knowing mother's love, he thought having sexual relationship with Miyasudokoro was correct while Miyasudokoro fell in love with Genji, she later found out Genji is seeking something from her (which is a mother's affection and love). 5. While watching this movie, Genji actually had a depression. He became a very lonely person and the 'hole' on his heart was not filled. SO BASICALLY, WHAT I'M SAYING HERE IS THAT, DON'T THINK THAT OUR STANDARD OR NORMS TODAY ARE SAME IN THE PAST AND DON'T COMPARE IT. "DON'T JUDGE THE BOOK BY ITS COVER" PLEASE. LASTLY, DON'T JUST READ WHAT THE WIKIP*DIA SAYS CAUSE NOT ALL OF THE INFORMATION ARE THERE AND DON'T COME HERE COMMENTING THAT GENJI IS A MAN SIMPLY WANTS TO BANG HIS STEP-MOM BECAUSE HE WANTED TO. I hope I made my point here.

General anime quality might have gone up. But modern anime definitely lacks range(artistically and subject matter wise) that older stuff had. That hand drawn look does alot to enhance the watching experience and in new anime all of that is lost in cleanup now. Kyoani movies look beautiful, but they also look exactly how I'd sterotypically describe anime.

early man preach. Animes nowadays have been materialized by the new gen technology and it’s sad to not see any handdrawn films or the ones that are detailed by man himself. If you know Hayao Miyazaki, he's one I admire tho.
@popcandy38125 жыл бұрын
Y'all need to understand that studios are putting out more anime a year than when they did back then, so they don't have a lot of time to put so much effort in fluidity. What's great about the "new gen technology" is that it helps speed up the process. The more frames an animator does a day with this new technology, the more money they get paidsince animators mostly get paid lower than minimum wage in Japan. At the end of the day, this is a business.
@earlyman74395 жыл бұрын
@@popcandy3812 i already know all of what you just said as im part of the sakuga community. Doesn't change the fact that anime nowadays generally looks low effort in every category except maybe animation direction which has made your average bad or mediocre show more watchable but still not any less bad. Anime has been corporatized and the detrimental effects of that are showing.
@popcandy38125 жыл бұрын
@@earlyman7439 You can probably blame that on the studio that predominantly adapted Osamu Tezuka's Manga because they started the trend on relying heavily on physical sales such as DVDs AND Merchandise. Though I never said that Anime quality has not been going down in recent years. At the same time, it has and it hasn't. New methods also improved significantly how anime turn out. At the same time Hand drawing is still a primary method used. Because Animators have basically no break, their health is worse. I'm just trying to make you understand partially why Anime is going down in quality.

@@dynamopirate470 As you can read I called these stories fucked up/strange since the actions in these stories/myths are fucked up but also funny to read with others since it gets so bizarre. But you can't compare these old myths with nowadays stories. Time is a diffirent country. So maybe they weren't so fucked up for people in the past. And just because someone likes a book or a movie with violent or worse action in it it doesn't mean he or she like the actions themselves. It is more like how these dangerous/sad/violent situations are implemented into the story/movie in order to have a good plot and flowing story. Sure, some movies like 'Jigsaw' are disgusting in my opinion and wonder how people can enjoy this movie but I am also sensitive to horror/ splatter movies and can't watch them. Yep I'm with you I was angry at Genji at first, bedding women left and right and other problematic stuff in our modern society. But as story goes on, I realized he's a tragic character. His actions are fueled by hidden pain and deep need for motherly affection. His stepmother looked like his dead mother but he mistakes the feelings for lust. Since he couldn't get his step mom, he seeks comfort in other women. I think the cathartic scene where he just dances under the Sakura tree and be self-aware of his issue is the best valuable lesson I can get from the story. Face them mommy issues Genji! But as for the aftermath, does Genji deal with it? Or saw his womanizing as wrong? I haven't read the entire literature yet, but seeing as it's a work from a different time, I bet the only self-reflection is focused on realizing his mommy issues part
I wished animation was still this charismatic; the simplicity, how delicate every motion is, the softness of fabric, how pliable skin can be, showing slow movements in detail makes it look sensual, lightweight and emotional. especially the gentle forehead touch and emphasis on slow blinks has me in tears 😭

Genji Monogatari was written 1000 years ago by a woman writing about her ideal fantasy guy, possibly even inserting herself into one of the women he loves.
