They hated it because they killed him off in such a disrespectful way and outright shit on him even after he's dead, all because he dared to save Ellie from dying for a supposed vaccine that had such a low chance of being made in the first place. Ned Stark's death should be used as a perfect example on how to kill a beloved character properly and still get a strong emotional response from the audience. Ned died because he refused to budge on his principles and he suffered from naivety and trusting the people around him to do what's right. These are the qualities that made him a strong leader in the North and what endeared him to the audience over the course of the first book / season. It also helps build the story of how the people in power and the people of Kings Landing operate under a different ruleset than the people in the North. It also helps that they never try to paint Cersei or Joffrey as likable later on. They are absolutely despised as characters and the story dumps heaps of karma on them that are direct results of their actions.

4:25:00 They also NEVER PAID JOEL for his work. They were never planning to. The fireflies, who were LITERALLY terrorists, they bombed civilians to try to get to government agents, planned to capture and murder what to joel at that point was his surrogate daughter, for what likely was a >1% chance at a "vaccine for fungi" ignoring to impossibility of such a thing. Thats not to mention the dismal state of the surgery room, the lack of supplies, tools, and likely highly trained personnel, and the fact that they refused to follow basic moral and legal (sure no laws still exist but they were put in place for significant reasons) practices by not even asking for Ellie or her guardians consent (YES. Joel at this point is her guardian. Marlene at best was a friend of her mothers who was absurdly negligent of the charge ellies mother put in her care. she ignored this little girl who lost all her family for YEARS, sending her off to boarding school until she found out she could be used for her own purposes. at this point joel has spent at a minimum a year with this little girl, with a history as a father. You cannot be so stupid as to unknowingly delude yourself into believing Marlene was to be considered her guardian.) based off their descisions, ON TOP of the fact that these people would likely use this for at a minimum a bargaining chip, and at worst a power play, and they planned to essentially KILL joel, yet people consider his actions both morally and ethically wrong. not even a shade of grey, he is just simply wrong. I genuinely HAVE to believe that these people are psychopathic

I think the moral argument is almost irrelevant because the way they act suggests that they are incompetent (the haste with which they act suggests that they are negligent) and they lack they equipment necessary to create an effective medicine or vaccine that could make any sort of difference. However, it should be noted that Edward Jenner's research into the creation of smallpox vaccine included deliberately infecting a child with smallpox, after an innoculation with cowpox. Given the time and that he was his gardener's son, I'm betting the kid didn't have much say in it. In a post-apocalyptic world where people are fighting each other over resources I suspect most of the people who are still alive will have become pretty flexible on the value of human lives. This is why I tend to think that the moral dilemma at the end of the Last Of Us only makes sense to people who aren't living in that situation. To the characters operating in that situation it's simply a question of taking what you want and killing anyone who get's in your way. Joel and the doctor are operating on exactly the same level. Arguably the second game makes it clear they are operating on exactly the same level. Both have daughters and both value their lives more than that of a similar young girl.

What sucks the most about Joel's death wasn't that it was unexpected, I think most people expected something to happen to Joel, it's because Joel should have died as he lived, smart, rescouceful, and protecting Ellie. Hell, any death where he died to save/protect Ellie would have inmesurably better received that the steaming pile of tism that we got. None of the major players were in character, not even the murderer from what we see of her in the rest of the game. Thus when it happens, I don't see Abby murdering Joel. I see Neil Druckman murdering Joel. And the worst part? This might have been forgiven, or at least allowed, if the rest of the game was on par with the first. Instead we got an, at best, alright game whose linchpin is noxius, tismic sludge.

There is an episode of the last airbender that handled the subject of forgiveness very well. I’m of course talking about the episode where Katara realizes that while she can’t bring herself to kill her mother’s killer, she also realizes that she needs to let that anger go and forgive Zuko. A pretty realistic take on that subject if you ask me. And this is a kids show that was on a network known for comedic sitcoms like Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents.
@papershadow4 жыл бұрын
I like that episode, but I would say it differs a bit in that Katara says she doesn't forgive him despite sparing his life, and the underlying conflict is her projecting the trauma/hate from her mother's death onto Zuko. Compared to TLOU2 scenario, where almost all the animosity is based on things the parties involved are directly culpable for (i.e. Ellie hates Abby for killing Joel, rather than as an extension of some inner conflict).
@austinjohnsen44304 жыл бұрын
papershadow69 I know that Katara doesn’t forgive the guy. The point is that she let’s her anger go and forgives Zuko, because it’s a bit much to forgive someone who murdered a loved one of yours.

@@papershadow I really don't the difference, the guy is directly responsible for her mother death, just because it wasn't shown on screen doesn't mean it isn't obvious he killed her and the damage it caused to sokka and katara lingered for years causing the internal conflicts.
@papershadow4 жыл бұрын
@@DigitalGame18 I'm talking about the fact that antagonistic focus of the plotline was Katara's anger at her mother's killer being projected onto her animosity towards Zuko as well. When did I deny who the killer was? My point was that the comparison isn't as strong because unlike Katara, Ellie's conflict is strictly with the person directly responsible for her vengeance motive (Abby), as opposed to split between the responsible party and a tangentially related party simultaneously.
@DigitalGame184 жыл бұрын
@@papershadow Its not that you denied, its that you weren't very clear about that point, thank you for clarifying. As for the second, tbh ellies character is kinda all over the place, and the game can't seem to decide whether she actually cared about joel or not, she wants revenge at points then drops it at a hat for some girl the player barely knows only to turn right around when she gets her happy ending to throw it away back on revenge without including people like tommy who offered to take her to get it, now that could be an interesteing development for the character but the ending being so open for interpretation plus the trauma and hardships of the custcenes before make the moral seem confusing at best and disjointed at worst. ellie just seems irrational and at some points completely bitter for little reason, so its kinda hard to actually care, I can only imagine most people only went through the game because they cared about joel, not ellies revenge.

It’s because this game feels like it’s forcing the revenge plot instead of making it seem subtle with realistic feeling characters. The only character that felt somewhat subtle, consistent, and relatable was Owen. And it sucks, cause I wanted to care about Tommy, Ellie, and Jessie, but they feel so underdeveloped, and it’s all because the game takes way too much time focusing on building up that “revenge is bad”. Bruce Straley even brought up the idea of a revenge story seeming ridiculous in a world of survival (he was a creative director for the first game). It’s going to seem contrived and coincidental no matter what, cause the resources of a modern world are no longer in that universe to make it easier to search for someone. Compare “The Last of Us” world to our version of the US, and you’ll see huge differences in what’s available to people, both technology and socially constructed wise. If they didn't want to be wiped out, the Fireflys in TLOU1 should have: 1) Allowed Ellie to wake up and obtain her permission before extracting her brain for their miracle cure. 2) Allowed Joel to witness their obtaining Ellie's permission and allowed Joel and Ellie to say goodbye before escorting Joel from the building. 3) Don't steal Joel and Ellie's belongings. 4) Don't threaten Joel with a weapon at close range. 5) Don't loudly and repeatedly exclaim to Joel how much you want to murder him for (as far as I can tell) absolutely nough reason. 6) If you are going to do none of the above, then kill Ellie before Joel wakes up. Tell him she hit her head underwater and went into a coma and there is nothing that anyone could have done to save her, but you are going to make her death mean something for humanity. Since they chose for none of these reasonable things to happen, my interpretation is that the Fireflys were just done with everything. This was basically their suicide by Joel-cop. This is backed up by how tired and hopeless they all are. In particular, Marlene basically sets everything up so that Joel has to kill her to avoid his or Ellie's death, including engaging him at close range on the way out the door after he's already killed pretty much everyone else in the building. I have to assume that she knew he would kill her and wanted that, or that she is so colossally stupid that eliminating her from the gene pool has raised the average IQ of humanity by dozens of points in the game-world.

The thing about the Spec Ops situation that made me feel bad for what I had done wasn't because the enemies were humanized, but because I didn't hesitate. Spec Ops does humanize the enemies throughout the whole game; there are plenty of reminders that there's no reason to shoot at the enemies, the horrible things the enemies did have contextual reasons, and all that fun stuff, but when I got to the end, I felt bad because I rarely hesitated, and all the game needed to do was put an objective marker and have Walker say "do this."

Indication is that Ellie is not unique and that the Fireflies have tried making a cure for a long time. There's also another recorder mentioning they can't remove the parasite without killing the host.

4:05:16 Unfortunately, that juvenile take is the only conceptualization of forgiveness that most people understand. Forgiveness isn't a platitude to be vomited up when someone digs a "sorry" out of their pocket, and it's definitely not something to be bestowed upon people who don't even think they have a reason to be sorry. Forgiveness is an acknowledgment that proper penance has been conducted; in other words, the person to be forgiven has recognized that they have done wrong to someone and they want to amends. It's not a "get out of punishment free" card. You have to want to change. Abby doesn't realize she was wrong, and still is wrong. She's not worthy of forgiveness, which makes it so much more galling that Ellie forgives that piece of roided-up filth and witholds it from Joel right up until it's too late.

My take on the “guitar flashback,” is that Ellie realizes she’s not just mad at Abby, but she’s mad at herself for waiting that long to give Joel a 2nd chance. This plays into the point of TLOU: Left Behind; that you can’t control what will happen in the future, so all you can do is take what you care about, and enjoy it for every moment you can. To own and fight for every minute, even if it’s the last minute. And Ellie did not do that with Joel. She wasted 4 years not realizing those were Joel’s last. Joel was bound to die eventually, somebody was going to catch up to him, even if Abby stayed in Seattle. And that’s why Ellie lets Abby go; Abby is just one of many; but it was on Ellie to not screw up her four years with Joel. Here’s the thing. This moral is incredibly cerebral and self-centered; it’s deep if you’re a fourteen yo with literally nothing else going on in their life. An adult would’ve shot Abby from the doorway, given Joel an honorable funeral, and fucking moved on.

I know nobody is interested in this but bloody hell Rag's take on the Ghost in the Shell adaption and the arguments about anime as a whole annoyed me and I haven't watched anime in almost 8 years. How can he, as someone who ostensibly enjoyed stand alone complex actually endorse the life action version beyond the possibility that it might trigger interest in the general audience, which to my knowledge it did not. The movie literally changes the core themes of the whole universe, whereas the original material has a positive outlook on trans humanism and its effect on society, the movie outright depicts it as a violation, a transgression , a perversion, the overall feel, for the most part being: Technology = bad. The main character is also drastically changed, from a personality which excelled based on her specific virtuous as a full body cyborg in a society full of full body cyborgs to the very first full body cyborg ever. But more than that, she is a victim to be pitied, a innocent anti-technology radical who was kidnapped, and forcibly turned into a machine, the ultimate rape victim. The original on the other hand was in an accident and survived only because of the cyborg technology. Again everything is on its head and tuned, funnily enough considering the topic of the stream, into a revenge story. As for anime as a whole, Mauler rightly interjected that anime is a medium and anything can be depicted via a medium. The statement that something didn't "benefit" from being an anime is asinine. In the same vein, nothing benefits from being live action, if anything it's much more restrictive. Did the ghost in the shell movie benefit from being life action? Did stand alone complex lose something by being anime? This is nonsense. The things Rags and Mauler don't like are pretty much all japanese storytelling tropes and acting techniques. Were one of them watch a japanese life action show, they'd almost certainly stumble over the same hurdles they ascribe to anime, since all most anime does is depict them with slight exaggeration. Rags should just come down from his lobotomized high horse and admit he doesn't enjoy most of japanese storytelling, or he could express his disapproval of the art style, its perfectly okay, I don't enjoy it as well, which is why I don't consume almost any of it anymore. But to outright show disdain for a medium, dismissing any and all works of which he has no knowledge, speaks of proud ignorance. And it fucking hurts to see proud ignorance held up as a core principle on Efap.

Regarding CVH's comments on MGSV, you're capable of going through the game without killing almost everyone. The people you do have to kill are your own men, and you have to kill them because you trusted Huey. Venom is also under the impression that he has killed Liquid at the end of the game.

The "Okay" at the end of The Last of Us is so fucking good. Ellie knows he's lying. Joel knows that Ellie knows that he's lying. But they both just pretend otherwise for the sake of their relationship.

I'm so glad to see others get that scene. You know that Ellie knows Joel is lying because she asked. She would not have asked if she was clueless.

As someone who genuinely loved TLOU2, I have to admit that everything Cosmonaut says is horseshit.

On Rags and armor. I remember one of the only nice things from The Walking Dead was a character wrapping his jacket sleeves with duct tape and it saved him from a bite. Only for him to be mocked for it and not use it anywhere else on his body.

The fun thing is that there are DnD characters that get better revenge stories done. I had a druid girl who's parents were killed infront of her eyes, and she was wandering aimlessly around until she got a hint of where the murderer could be. And after a hard battle, the party tied him up and she asked him why he did it. She is not an aggressive or murderous character, she is extremely timid, shy and just wants to live a quiet life. But when he said "because I felt like it", she snapped and started stabbing him, asking him again and again why he killed them, only to not even get answers anymore. She stopped midway tho, just exhausted mentally and on the brink of just crying and giving up, saying that all she wanted was answers and now she has even less then before. She wanted him to let him rot, but he broke out of his ropes and stabbed her one final time before he died from the stabwounds. And that's when she just absolutely broke and stabbed his corpse until she passed out crying. Now, am I saying that this is a good end for a revenge story? No. But I am saying that the pure evil murderer who has even less of a reason to kill the most important persons in my characters life had more talk with the protagonist than Abby had with Ellie at the end.

I would much rather this have been Abby's and Joel's story than the one we got in game
