Speed up Yellow Dog Linux 6 on the PS3 Phat using fluxbox

One of the appeals of Yellow Dog linux is the excellent out of the box support for the Sony Playstation 3 hardware. One of its downsides conversely is the poor out of the box performance. This shortcoming however can largely be mitigated thanks to fluxbox. In the video I run 4 applications simultaneously and the system stays quite responsive. I will need to update my guide. In the mean time you will need to boot up into fluxbox once to create a default menu. So log out then at the boot screen click session then fluxbox and log in. Once it has booted log out and log change your session again to gnome and log in. Go to the .fluxbox folder in your home menu. double click the menu.txt file and delete all the text with in it. In firefox open a new tab paste the txt file url in the address bar. copy paste save. see reference for more help.

I would say yes it runs better the enlightenment . fluxbox adds a good bit of pep to linux on the ps3.

I just finished downloading YDL 6.1 from the Oregon University FTP server. Make sure you go to ISO...should be last on the list. If it doesn't work first time just keep on trying it took me about two tries.

Fluxbox is less of a resource hog than e17. I don't understand why the YDL devs didn't chose it in the first place? The Linux kernel needs to be modified to properly handle the PS3s RAM. If I'm not mistaken it uses a more advanced type of RAM.

I believe it is in 6.2. The CPU with its 6 spu's has always been completely open. Some talented programmers have made apps that use the spus as a substitute gpu but performance is quite poor and not worth your while.

Thanks man for the info. Bad news here, while I was away I left my ps3 on during the heat wave with no ac on.. It overheated and wont work. The new PS3 slim is designed to be more durable and realible and I was going to wait to buy one but then I heard it dosnt support other oss. I'll just get my ps3 repaired.

Is the vram activated by default with YDL? If no i think they should put it by default now... Plus i've heard Sony gaved recently the possibility to use CPU for some 3D emulation...

C++ is a programing language. I am unaware of a method where you can install yd on your ps3 using a usb stick.

@jessexbraughton yeah, me too. on my standard tv, everytime i login ydl 6.2, i dont have the interace like u have shown in the begining of this video. i only can login by the kernel view, i have to login by putting ROOT as user Then my Password THEN enter Xautoconfig then startx. y cant i have the simple screen wer i jus input User Name and Password?

can any1 tell me why when i install it looks all clasic y and none of that compix effect? also, when i am installing wich i am at this time is says at the top but eveythings fine it says "unable to instantiate a X hardware state object"?

It doesn't work for me. I did everything in that guide but when I open .fluxbox/menu it's empty, and when I try to save it with that URL it just says .fluxbox can't be found.

ive got an acer aspire one and use yum to install things but the yum server has gone down so installing things is impossible. so i don't know about yellow dog at the moment

Hey anyone tried installing YDL 6 on an SDTV? the reason i ask is that mine comes up black and white..... and ideas? Just for your info i have had 6.1 in the past with full colour so i dont understand why 6.0 is B/W weird... thanks anyway.

@Antiks72 windows is terrible! been there, done that. YDL 6.2 is great so far. I'm running Opera and Firefox on YDL 6.2 on ps3 atm. Amazing to have a pc on my 61in hdtv without streaming from pc. It rox

@Antiks72 kde and e17 is a buggy mess. Try gnome or xfce. I like fluxbox. Running windows on a ps3 is a buggy mess.
