Him Again have you tried hitting yourself with it? No I don't think so, because that would hurt, even if it's not designed to hurt the horse. It's still gonna hurt. If it was solely for the sound, why not hit the saddle or your leg? Because that would take away the pain from the horse and so it wouldn't be effective enough. Don't be like this.

Also wanted to add, many horses don't protest as much as you think. Most horses do as you say when you whip them, simply because they are afraid of more whipping. Some become aggressive indeed, but most of them don't, so that makes that point invalid.

A friend of mine grew up around horses (like I did). His dad was big on discipline and he used to get punished with a belt at home, but a couple of times when he'd really done something bad he told me his dad took him into the tack room and gave him six hard whack with a riding crop. That must have been agony.

Piper Grayway It can keep them focused i.e. if they are straying into a dangerous position then it can just doubly make sure they move and also many jockeys say its more the noise that urges them forward than the use of the whip for injury

Anyone that knows horses KNOWS they will give you their ALL when running, so there is NO need to whip them. I'd love to whip the jerk jockeys who thinks that's inspiring the horse to run faster. The only thing inspiring is the thought of $$$$ to the detriment of the young horse who will break it's neck, legs and anything else to please the jockey. RUN the jockeys and beat them instead. See if they run faster when being beaten, when they are already running as fast as human possible.

+2Ryled If you knew anything about the sport rather than just commenting on the back of no knowledge or experience at all you'd know that this isn't true. Firstly the money in racing is poor for the most part, there's really not any $$$ in it... take it from someone who knows XD. a jockey earns 9.5% of the prize money, of which the average is about £8-9,000for a run of the mill handicap, 10% of which would be £800-900, after tax;and other expenses that drops significantly.....So no big bucks I'm afraid! Besides, the £157.75 riding fee is the same wherever you finish, so getting at a horse if you're out of contention would be pointless and really counter intuitive anyway. Second, the horse is in an altered state of mind when racing so the sticks don't hurt at all. (they don't anyway but the altered state of mind means they do see it as encouragement). Also, the whip can get a horse to use themselves more, especially at a fence or in the finish.... It can also help get a young horse balanced properly, and stop a collision into another horse. Also, jockeys love horses.... You really think anyone in racing would do anything if it was hurting a horse? It would be completely counter productive aside from anything else. You really want to sit there with no experience and tell us that firstly the whip doesn't work, and second it has a detrimental effect on a horse? Really? Doesn't that seem like slightly flawed logic to you? Firstly until you've ridden in races how can you know what effect a whip has? Furthermore why the hell would using a whip if it doesn't work, like you say bring in big money? If the whip is detrimental to a horse and slows them down surely us using it would be pretty fucking dumb; we'd realise the horses weren't extending themselves properly and it'd stop. Some jockeys must be half decent at their job or no-one would be getting these apparent big bucks.....Or are you trying to say no-one apart from you knows what they're talking about? There isn't one person with a slightly more fond view of racing that knows anymore than nothing?.... Seems fairly unlikely. The arguments you're putting forward are not only incorrect, but mutually exclusive. So please, your opinion is your business and you're quite entitled to it, but before you put stuff like this in the world; do your research, go to the races, go to a racing yard.... See what goes on from every perspective and then come back with even the correct arguments for your cause....Because if you knew anything you'd know that what you're saying aren't even the objections anti-whip campaigns have. Please do some research my friend, you're entitled to your opinion but being blinkered (pardon the pun), and ignoring all sides only serves to leave you open to a weak looking argument. There is the odd example of poor whip use I will concede, but 99% of the time the whip is used effectively and safely and jockeys who do not adhere to proper use are punished.... I can only comment on British and Irish racing because it is all I know, in America things might be different let me make that clear; over here though, the RSPCA (the body that actually knows about animal cruelty) is in agreement with the BHA that the current guidelines, rules and punishments for excessive use and proper use are fair, just and reasonable to both horse and rider. They are also in agreement that the whip is a useful asset for both bringing the best out of a horse, and maintaining a safe racing environment.The whip is an emotive subject, but as it stands the whip is a tool that promotes a positive effect on a horse.... Not all horses, and this is accounted for by jockeys but the whip is more than useful, and is instrumental in helping ensure not only that a horse gives their all, but also in ensuring a safe racing environment free of collisions. I understand if your opinion does not change, but please try and put forward a strong, un contradicting and fair argument in future.... Slanging matches get nobody anywhere...

broadwaygirl84 Then why do some horses benefit from headgear? Put blinkers or cheek-pieces on a lazy horse it can turn them inside out. Horse might go to the races one day with nothing and pull up... The next day with blinkers go and win. Take Silviniaco Conti. Also, how does that explain bridle horses? Horse like My Tent Or Yours who does everything on the bridle and is a complete don on the bridle, but when produced and asked finds little. Or Vibrato Valtat; he gets to the front and immediately slows.... If horses all give their maximum effort always how do you explain this? Thoroughbred racehorses are marvellous, wonderful creatures, and they are as diverse as humans. Every horse is different, and it is wrong to generalise....

Good use of the whip ?? hahaha sounds funny. Sounds funny hearing somebody saying that whipping an animal for egoist- human purposes is "good". A horse is ""designed"" for ridinng? Ok, true... but in freedom, everytime the horse wanted just for fun, or when necessary, not when whipped. Do you want your boss to estimulate you by beating you every time he wanted to do things faster or better ??? I hope that someday, people could start to understand that animals are not for human fun or purposes.
