I love how when Effy walks out, Cook's out in the rain to greet her. 💗 Even though it's a sad scene. I think with Effy the problem is there's always that feeling of "burden." The burden to be a good girlfriend, daughter, sister and friend. Depression alters how you feel in such a complete and irrevocable way, that it's hard a lot of the time, to be what other's want you to be. To put on a face, to smile, to socialize. To pretend that life is not a struggle in and of itself and holding to keep it together. Being surrounded by a lot of people: You're always being held accountable. Of your feelings, actions, words, etc. And, at times, it's not possible to hold that mask up anymore. Back to Effy and Cook: I wish Effy wasn't so cold to him. Cook wasn't perfect, but I thought he was perfect for her. Disappointed that the writer's didn't do Ceffy justice.

Everybody in comments saying how cook and effy should've been together are forgetting a big thing. She didn't love him and he didn't love her. He loved the idea of effy....wild, beautiful, free, smart....but cook was never going to be able to handle her illness. He would've tried and failed and then left town, both heartbroken yet Freddie was able to help her, he understood her illness(as much as he possibly could) and he wanted to make her better. Cook loved effy but only when she was his equal(again wild, carefree), effy loved cook but only as a good fuck, fallback and as distraction from her true feelings of love for Freddie(those feelings terrify her for a number of reasons)

i disagree, i think cook did love effy as a whole, she broke his heart several times and he still forgave her. She didnt love him back and as you said, he wouldnt have handled her mental illness, they wouldnt work but it doesnt mean he did not love her entirely
