Efke 50 and 100 were my favorite films in 120 size after Verichrome Pan was discontinued. I'm glad that the 100 speed has been resurrected by Adox/Agfa.

I miss Efke films so much - especially the 820 IR. Loved to shoot it with my Mamiya 7II. Nowadays there's no "real" infrared film anymore 😥 The Rollei Infrared and the Ilford SFX don't have the same spectral sensitivity that the Efke 820 IR had.

True about stocking up on your favourites. Wish I stocked up on the 100ft rolls of neopan 400 I used to buy.

Thank you for the video .In the past I used this film (the 25 ASA) .Now I use Foma but very high speed for me 100 ISO .I like the sheets films and the odd size 127 .Efke had poor reputation but for me it was very good . The sheet films are very well paked ,with 3 parts boxe and there were paper protection between each sheet film . Foma use simple box in two parts and all the sheets films are in a black plastic bag . Sad news when I tried to buy new films and I discover the production stoped for baked down machinery and no money to fixed it .

You can still get the stuff as ADOX CHS 100 II. Both in 135 and 4x5 sheet film.

nice comparison! I still have about 25 Rolls of Efke 50 / 35mm expired in 2014 in my fridge. It is a nice but tricky emulsion. I had the little spots too. Using a bit more alkali fixer reduced it a bit but may be that is just coincidence. Unfortunately they had a bit of bad quality control in croatia that days. What i really miss is the Efke IR 820 for occasional IR shots…

I never shot the 50 stuff, but I have the 25 speed video recorded

The film was vertically dried, which might have made it as good or bad as possible. I loved the stuff in 100 or 50 speed, and both developed beautifully in R09 1:65. The emulsion did slide off the base if it soaked too long.

@@TheNakedPhotographer shame id really love to hear what you think about the current ORWO emulsions. A video on what kinds of developers there are and how they will generally behave with what kinds of films and why. I mean that in a general sense in that for example you "cant" develop T grain films in rodinal since there is a chemical in it that makes the grain mushy, not just a comparision. I find your series quite informative but information on why a films curve is that way would be more helpfull since one can extrapolate that knowlege for different situations.

Unfortunately efke isn't coming back. Like many, or dare I say most legendary Croatian brands, Fotokemika d.d. (the company that manufactured and sold the efke brand) went bankrupt in 2003 due to country-wide massive privatization after communist rule ended in the 90s. This was when the main factory in Zagreb closed. After that, a few employees started a new company (Fotokemika-Nova d.o.o.) and continued production in their second factory in the nearby city of Samobor. This continued until 2012, when the factory literally fell apart. They had massive floods and the machines started to malfunction. At that point it was a small company so they could not afford to renovate and permanently closed doors. We started playing with film again in school a few years back, and my teacher suggested we get efke stuff, it was domestic production and the cheapest after all. You can imagine how sad we were when we found out that they went out of business. We found a few rolls of efke film in the photo lab and decided to keep them sealed as a "museum piece"

Supposedly the Adox CMS 100 film is the Efke 100 formula, but I haven’t shot any side by side to see.

Efke films... it was a sad day when they were gone as they had character - however they were massively lacking quality-wise. All of the films I've tried had massive problems with dirt/pinholes in the emulsion - just like you noticed, rendering it useless for any fine-art projects. Still, that 25 and 50 ISO films... had character (when you got usable results). I still have most of a bulk roll of their 100 speed film and am not using it due to the quality problems...

> "Dude..!!!" 😨 - I would have wanted to do and say things to this guy that I can't post here. I didn't know Efke although I live in Europe. At any rate, cheap(er) film can deliver very nice results, I miss orwochrome slide film for instance. Story time: I knew orwochrome by heart, because I shot it on a nearly daily basis. That was expensive enough, because I wouldn't choose a cheap lab. Results were predictable. Once I got an assignment by someone pretty important (for me), good results would possibly trigger more assignments. I chose a brand I had hardly shot with before in order to _really_ convince them. Big mistake, I ruined it. Verdict: Test, test, test and know your film stock. That's why I'm really grateful for this series, the detailed analysis helps a lot to evaluate whether a film stock is worth trying.

I understand the reasoning for the baseline comparison, but would love to see you do a series showing these films in actual real world use. I feel like the vast majority of ppl shooting film today are not studio shooters working with controlled lighting. I think it might be more beneficial/educational to show the film being used in varietal natural light settings. THANKS FOR STORY TIME! I would be sick at 2 boxes of film being ruined. 😢
