Exploring the secret origins and true meaning of Lag b'Omer. What really happened to Rabbi Akiva and his 24,000 students? Who is Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and how did he end up hiding in a cave for 13 years? What does reincarnation, Sefirat haOmer, and the Roman Empire have to do with it all?

It’s extremely disturbing with the person that is interrupting all the time. I like to listen but it’s hard to follow the teaching when it’s interrupted so much. Besides that, the lesson is great! Thank you

The number 24, made by doubling 12, figures in many other places in this story. Rabbi Akiva had 12,000 pairs of students who died (equalling 24,000). He also studied for 12 years, was going to come home when he heard his wife say to a neighbor that if he wanted, he could study for another 12 years so he did. Then, Rav Shimon Bar Yochai was in hiding in a cave for 12 years, came out and he (and his son) were so "fiery" they were sent back into the cave for 12 months before coming out.

Not explicitly, but there is a tradition that it was 24,000. Wrote more about it here: www.mayimachronim.com/pinchas-is-eliyahu-and-so-much-more

Kind of a bad omen if so many of your students suddenly die. And the cause not being hunger, oppression or war but plague. Don’t know what he thought at that time or what they thought but seams to be sick if god gave them back sickness, but it also may just be a coincidence.
