You'll already know, Chris, that when a world-class performer in any worthwhile endeavor (sports, music, drama, visual arts, chess) is *_way off *_** on a given day, there is *always* a revelatory underlying reason.

Efren Bata Reyes was not on his game here. Rodney Morris was on his game in pool today. But still enjoy to watch them play. Whether they mess up or not. I love to play against either one of these players. Even though I would get whipped bad. Be fun to say I played against them. And get there autograph and picture of me with them. What a joy or honor that will be. But doubt that will ever happen. But I can dream can't I now????🎱

Reyes was very despondent (sad and totally distracted) playing poorly because he had just learned that his father in the Philippines was severely ill -- his father died a week later.

Rex: You would have to have read the description (immediately under the "Published on . . . " ) to know. About half of Anglo-phonic viewers jump right into the vid without reading that. Perfectly natural.

rodney was smooth! efren pretty much gave up on the last rack. he could've made that 1 but he just didn't have the mental energy to keep going anymore. his thoughts were of his dad that day. not to take away from rodney though -- he's a solid player

Take a minute to read the Description if you will, Ed. Every few months a mis-characterization about nerves & pressure, or cloth color, affecting Efren's playing that day, innocently but wrongly comes up. *Efren was totally despondent and playing poorly, having just received the news that his father was severely ill back home.* Efren felt obligated to play the match as scheduled, then flew back home to be at his dad's bedside with the rest of the family. Sadly, his father died a week later.

ray carlton billiards ● OK, thanks! You're correct. I hadn't read the description. Having played pool since the mid-60's, I've played on different colored cloth. I played once on a table covered in a deep-red cloth (more like a maroon). I found that one to be the hardest to get used to.

Rodney played pretty well. Efren played the worst I think he ever played in the 1990s. Some have said he was inclined to choke in finals. I never really believed that, but the way he played here makes me wonder.

+timothybolshaw: Read the description - apparently, Efren's father was dying during this tournament. His head, understandably, was with his family.... During his "prime" years, he would be the one player I would choose without hesitation to represent me were my life on the line. And I am sure I would not be alone in that choice.

Take 5 minutes, John, and go to to meuccicues.com and click on their Contact/questions option. They'll have the authoritative answer. Bob Meucci (cuemaker) himself will remember (be sure to mention the name of this tourney and its date). Few viewers would have this kind of specific info from 25 years ago.

Just before the game started Efren received a call from the Philippines informing him that his father was extremely ill. That's the reason he was playing badly -- he was unable to concentrate. His father died a week later.
