This 400AH 12 volt portable solar hand truck is great for an off-grid appliance power supply. Two Victron 100/30 charge controllers, coupled with 800 watts of solar panels, has proven to be enough to run a large 2 door refrigerator and a regular sized refrigerator with power to spare. This was a straight-forward simple project to complete. Using the KISS (keep it simple stupid) method, with the right tools and wire, can produce a reliable, modular solar generator at a fraction of the cost with quality components to boot!

UPDATE: I ran the solar cart for a couple of days with the 2 refrigerators hooked up in 100 degree heat. The morning of the 3rd day the battery was at 13% before the sun came up. I unhooked the refrigerators from the inverter and plugged them into shore power. After letting it charge all day, did leave the inverter on by mistake, It charged up to 92%, even after angling the solar panels. I'm running 400 watts of panels per 100-30 charge controller (Victron suggests 440w12v). Highest solar input was 350 watts per controller, 2.25 Kwh per day. The beauty of having a modular solar generator is being able to swap out components. I'm going to upgrade the charge controllers to Victron 100-50 so I can run 600w12v panels per controller and, hopefully, not have to worry about running out of juice. Fortunately they are the same size as the 100-30s, so the wiring and placement can stay the same!

The crate is 16 x 24 x 5 inches. On the latest version of this, I used a piece of plywood for the breakers and bus bars. I then attached the inverter and charge controllers directly to the hand truck frame using aluminum strips and plumbers metal tape. This allows more airflow around the inverter and charge controllers. The aluminum strips were from a greenhouse plastic connecting system I had laying around. I just needed something that would connect to the inverter and controllers, then be able to connect to the frame of the hand truck. The white and black isolator switch was then moved to the outside of my solar shed for easy access.
