I remember this game! So many Trekesque games like this were around in the 80s. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. 🤗🤗

Yes, there are different versions. The version I have 2.3 I think, still had the Enterprise in it and you fought Klingons. Later they had to change the names due to lawsuit threats. For the best effect you need the earlier version.

Tilmon Hocutt I found my old dos system, and my version for this game says “Revision 3.1”.

I still love this game no matter I played it for the first time 30 years ago! I bought it in a K-Mart in Ponce, Puerto Rico for five dollars as a shareware for my first computer, a 386SX. It made me fell I was on an episode of Star Trek. Wonderful time!

Wow, I had this game on my 8Mhz Turbo XT when I was a kid. This takes me right back!

I believe that "Star Trek" (This is a VERY graphically enhanced version of the game, probably one of it's ultimate evolutions.), is probably one of the VERY FIRST, if not THE FIRST, viral video game. If you go back in time, every damn computer from IBM clones, to the C64, to the ZX Spectrum, to the Vic-20, to the Commodoe PET, to the CBM's, to the Radio Shack computers, all the way back to the giant mainframes of the late 60's and early 70's, had too many versions of this game written for and running on them to count. Every single home computer had multiple versions of this game. Dozens of type-in books had versions of this game in them. They sold this game on disks and tapes! You couldn't find a system that didn't have this game. I think the only computers that this game never came out for was the consoles like the Atari 2600 and Intellivision, etc.. Game consoles just didn't have this game. But EVERY computer did. I knew someone who worked in a computer lab in the late 60's and he said that they had this game, and they had to load it into the computer using a roll of punched paper tape. And he said that there was no video monitor. It was played using a typewriter, and a printer.

This game is graphical version of the BASIC trek game from 70s. The C/Curses port of it still part of the standard install on BSD systems.

I'm certainly not short of requests, but just on games for the Ain't Played In Ages series. I've got quite a lot of Overlooked Oldies yet to do, but I'll add those to the list.

Never been a great ST fan, but did play this game a lot, even though it needed an EGA emulator to play this on my 286 with CGA card.

I remember asking my dad to pay $2.5 (I think) to download this from Prodigy BBS. The first game I ever paid for, even though it was actually freeware. It's also funny how back then, I thought that the hardest difficulty was impossible (I remember being ridiculously proud when I finally did), even though it's pretty easy to beat at difficulty 5.

Looking for a star trek game in basic called "star challenge". It had no graphics, grids or anything but text. Several klingon ships would slowly move closer and fire weapons at you and you would fire back. The game was in a book of basic games a friend owned by in the 80's. Just been looking for several years so when I get the chance I ask. It's difficult to search for due to the name.

The way I've found old games that I can't remember the names of is to use the google image search. Like I couldnt remember this was called EGA trek, so i just image searched "windows 3.1 star trek" and just scrolled till I saw something familiar. You can just type "old dos games" or whatever and scroll through the pics till you see something you recognise. Doesnt always work ofc.. ive exhausted myself trying to find this old top-down dungeon/puzzle EGA game I used to love with no luck, yet.

Good idea. However the problem is more the games I don't remember. Sometimes I've come across a video or screenshot by accident and thought "oh wow I totally forgot about that". So having a big image list to look through would be great for finding those.

I had a high school computer class that used TRS-80 computers that had Dos on a 8 inch floppy. The version of DOS included a crude version of this game. I spent all of my time in this class playing this game. It was a point in time that all the instructers for high school computer classes were just clueless and they were just impressed if you could do anything on the computer. HAHA, Even playing games got you a good grade. :)
@flash24g10 жыл бұрын
I recently discovered the original Star Trek game on which EGA trek was based. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_(text_game) Is the crude version you played something like this? I then wrote a D port of that game.

I could've sworn the version I had was Klingons and the United federation. Like actual star trek

Yeah the original version was like that, but this version was made to avoid infringing copyright.

I think someone should make a family tree of all these mainframe Star Trek offshoots, kind of like what was done with the Roguelike genre.

You should've moved closer to avoid hitting your base. No biggie though, however at harder difficulty settings you won't have time for screw ups.

Some old DOS games used to base there timing on how fast the computer was. As computers got faster the games that were designed this way would fly out of control way to fast making the old games unplayable. To fix this issue they devised a way to put a switch on the processor that would slow it down so you could still play your old games on your new faster 386. lol So, how do you think they labeled this "slow down switch?" I have allways found it quite funny it was called the "turbo" switch!
@flash24g10 жыл бұрын
I think you'll find those old DOS games still do base their timing on processor speed .... :) But on all such PCs I've seen, the slowdown is a Hobson's choice - if the slower speed is still too fast or it's now too slow then you're out of luck. The exception is some Amstrad PCs with a proprietary "device" utility, one of whose functions is to change the CPU speed. For example, the PC2386 could run at 4, 5, 7, 10 or 20 MHz IIRC. Strange to be discussing this on a page about a non-real-time game, but anyway....
@josephrogers12829 жыл бұрын
+Stewart Gordon My old Compaq Deskpro had a similar utility to the one you describe on your Amstrad. Mind you, she was a 12Mhz 286 to begin with, so being too slow wasn't usually the problem! Some early games were fine though, I've run the original Elite unmodified on an Athlon 1400 with no problems, so I always assumed it was lazy development which was the problem.
