Egg Cannon 400+ mph raw hardboiled frozen Comparison

In previous videos, I had requests to test the difference between raw, hard boiled, and frozen eggs fired from a compressed air cannon and compare the damage of one versus the others. The canon set up that was used is able produce egg speeds in the excess of 400 mph. Eggs used have a mass of about 50 grams. Comparison was made against a flat surface and multiple surfaces spread apart.
Eggs used have were donated due to being past their expiration date and no longer able to be sold for consumption

In the meanwhile, the local hospital is still receiving injured people from surrounding area, surprisingly, they all smell like rotten eggs. Thanks Bruce!

If you think a little more about the problem of how to slow an egg back down, I figure you would need to decelerate the object over a comparable distance as what launched it. But what's most impressive to me, is just how well your sabot method works. Apparently, you have not yet reached the limit of how fast this device can launch an egg, without destroying it. Can't wait to see what you come up with next!

This video should have at least 1 million views. I bet if you would, just by swapping-out the thumbnail image with a picture of the egg gun (0:18 would be an ideal thumbnail). I think YT allows that in their creator studio but I don't know for sure.

Great video! It would be a better comparison if you found a material that could stop at least 2 of the eggs so you'd have a winner. Even if you have to reduce the cannon pressure to do it.

Even if the egg breaks on contact with the target, the liquid contents keep their inertia. For the egg to break without piercing or deforming the target, the contents at each point within the egg will have to change direction (change from forward motion to outward radial “splat” motion) as soon as that point within the egg reaches the target surface. The inertial force the fluid exerts as it deflects around a solid object is known as dynamic pressure. For a true liquid without any shell or other mechanical strength holding it together, dynamic pressure is proportional to density and the square of velocity. I believe that because of the interdependence of metric units, pressure (in pascals)=0.5(density in kg/m^3)(velocity in m/sec)^2 With that formula, if we assume the eggs’s average density is 1000kg/m^3 and it’s velocity is 200m/sec then the dynamic pressure is *20MPA or about 3000psi.* This force is significantly greater than the strength of either the raw or hardboiled egg, and that’s why the shell strength makes very little difference until after the egg has passed through the target and had time for its material to disperse.

@@YeanyScience just curious, what’s the highest air pressure you have been able to use in the launcher and still have the egg stay in one piece? I’m amazed you have been able to launch it at the speeds you have! If you end up getting even closer to the sound barrier, it’s possible steam or combustion will give better results than room temperature air.

I know it's maybe not your speed, but maybe explore spaced, and angled penetration (a la tank armour) with eggs, just to explore both transitions and using geometry to increase a substances resistance to penetration. Maybe even explore non-solid (meshes and the like) spacing to prevent penetration of the 2nd solid.
