I make a similar fire starter using egg cartons. I use sawdust and old used candles. So all my materials are free. The difference is, I mix the sawdust into the wax over heat until I get the desired amount mixed in. This way the wax penetrates the wood. Then I spoon it into the egg carton and give it a slight pack down. Right now I have so many cartons, candles, and sawdust, I need to make more. LOL

I use similar fire starter using birch bark and dry wood, or piece of paper and dry wood, or alcohol and dry wood.

Oooh, I love the idea of getting was at Goodwill! I'm one of many that just uses drier long but up until now I've been buying paraffin. I know what I'm loading up on the next time we're at a thrift store! Thanks you😊

Should the carton have had brown or white eggs in it?

How difficult were those to ignite? Would a wick have helped? Would adding a few match heads to each have helped?

They can be custom to whatever you desire. I can generally light these with a match or lighter no problem. In the past I’ve made them with some dry dryer lint on top to ignite with just a striker. These are a ton easier to light that the dense wood fiber type though. Thanks for tuning in!

Makes it more waterproof if you make sure the egg crate part of your fire starter is completely saturated in wax

Haven't tried it yet because it's summer here. No need for fire. I wonder if sawdust would work? I get it for nothing at work. Along with my free firewood.

Sorry but what it is good for? Why you just don't purchase a gasoline and splash it on some dry wood? Or why you don't purchase solid alcohol fuel?

Fair question. These are good for a sustained flame in wet or windy conditions for one. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest pretty much every outing was rain and no dry tinder could be found. Also good for wet kindling. One could use gasoline, but I've never seen a news story that a wax fire starter was mishandled resulting in severe burns. That and dragging liquid fuel along isn't my favorite. Last weekend I was in the mountains camping and snow was falling; all the wood was wet. Used one of these and got a fire going direct to kindling. I've never used solid alcohol fuel. These ease of lighting the edge of the egg carton work fine.
