Great video. I'm new to quail, with 5 hatches & 100 birds on my resume. Two observations: 1)My rare cases of "splayed leg" were chicks that hatched after a hatch window of 12-18hr after the first chick hatched; if slippery floors were the cause, there'd be a much higher number of splayed legs in 120 eggs. 2)16g eggs barely fit in my quail rails; I select 14-16g eggs for incubation, period. Maybe other quail rail designs allow for bigger eggs, but mine are limited to a maximum 16g. Thanks for all your hard work, Terry! I've learned a tremendous amount from your videos. Can't thank you enough!

I used a new incubator and the temperature after the second week dropped and i couldnt get it proper up again. thats now the second incubator i tried, with the initial smaller one i had some success. With the circulation fans and the forced air tunnel at the bottom of the incubator I hope there is no stagnant air. The only holes are the ventilation holes on the top and sides.

My last hatch was absolutely horrific. Only 50% of the fertile eggs hatched, fully developed but failed to hatch. Overall only a 38% hatch rate!!! The cause: bacteria. My incubator was bought second hand (used), I bleached it but not well enough. When I opened the incubator it smelled like a rotting carcass (sorry to be graphic). I have since researched that a 10% solution bleach requires 100% contact for 10 minutes to fully disinfect. After that disaster of a hatch, I soaked my incubator for 3 hours and now on day 10 the incubator has no odor whatsoever. Once the hatch is complete I will post the results on your FB page to help educate others. Hygiene is of utmost importance.

How true is it that you can't open your incubator during lockdown and if so how long before you can?
@CoturnixCorner4 жыл бұрын
You can open during lockdown as long as none of the eggs have pipped. Just be quick about it so the humidity levels don't drop too much. Try not to disturb the eggs as the chick are positioning themselves for the hatch.

@CoturnixCorner4 жыл бұрын
The eggs should start hatching within 24 hours of pipping. They're probably just resting up for the big escape.
@tropicallivingoverseas52022 жыл бұрын
Disagree. Your list of reasons is incomplete? Incubator cleanliness might be an important factor. I had every single item on your list addressed and I was lucky to get a 50% hatch rate. My quail kept dying around lockdown time. Never figured it out. Tried everything. I assumed my Styrofoam incubator couldn't be properly cleaned.
@Spark_Iskra_z_Polski Жыл бұрын
I disagree. I think it was poor air exchange. You suffocated your quail in this styrofoam. There mist be proper air flow.

@CoturnixCorner4 жыл бұрын
I get them once in a while with my younger hens and it's probably due to them just getting their egg laying "factory" working. It usually will fix itself, if it continues I would look at calcium levels.

Great video. I think I may have to low temperature in my homemade incubator, every time I have a lot of fully (or almost fully) developed chicks they didn't hatch/pip. Usually, they start to hatch over 24 hours later. What is the range of temperature eggs will still hatch but with a higher mortality rate? I bought thermometer suppose to be calibrated and it looks like I had 98F - is it possible they hatch when incubated 98F?

Is it possible to hatch quail eggs from tje grocery store
@CoturnixCorner3 жыл бұрын
Ive seen it done before, but I'm sure the hatch rates aren't that good.
@josieh11634 жыл бұрын
My first attempt at hatching was unsuccessful. I collected 15 eggs from my breeders. 3:1 females to males. After 10 days I candled the eggs and removed 5 clear ones. The other ten I turned by hand 2x a day. Day 15 lockdown. By day 21 nothing hatched. I opened all eggs. 10 dead chicks at various stages of development. 2 chicks fully grown and formed but didn't hatch. What caused such a variation of embryo development and mortality?
@CoturnixCorner4 жыл бұрын
Presuming your breeding stock is healthy, It sounds to me like either an issue with your incubator (maybe temp fluctuations) or a low humidity issue. Whenever you have a hatch with a lot of egg mortality I always look for something like an equipment failure. When you have issues with lots of infertile eggs but get a decent hatch rate then look to the birds or setup being the issue.
@ogueyratogeyrat74482 жыл бұрын

@Josrofer4 жыл бұрын
Also don't the hatched chicks that are running around during lockdown disturb the unhatched eggs seeing that they move them constantly? This is why I'm torn between the advise not to open the incubator and wanting to get them out so as not to disturb the rest of the eggs.
@CoturnixCorner4 жыл бұрын
I haven't had any issue with earlier chicks disturbing the eggs that haven't hatch. I usually pull the first chicks out after 24 hour or once they have dried off and are nice a fluffy. I've also never had any issues with opening the incubator, but I will aways look for pipped eggs before I do. If I see pipped eggs I usually will wait until they've hatched then I'll quickly remove the dried birds.
