As a New Zealander and an avid ABs supporter, I have to say I'm embarrassed by that episode of "The Breakdown." That is not how we view our rugby. The ABs were outplayed by a far superior team on the night; end of story! It is now time for us to look at how we control our game under the rules and conditions that everyone else in the RWC are playing under. It doesn't get any fairer than that. Well done our Springbok brothers, you gave us lots of lessons to learn from. Sorry about our commentators.

I am a bok supporter and have toured before and encountered many NZ supporters. The best in the world and they know their ruggers better than anyone. They know a spanking when they see one and indeed were gracious in defeat. One sour grapes pundit show does not a true New Zealand supporter make ... more concerning is that SA did no one any favors by waking them up. See you in the final hopefully ... it's the gold standard fixture.

It's all about their passion for the game and their birth right that the AB's are the best in the world. But I absolutely love watching the Breakdown show when the AB's lose 😂😂 Bring out the 🍿 Ireland series was a Classic one. OMW, the excuses. If the AB's win, hey, they'll unpack that for an hour 😅😅 Hopefully, i can watch next week Monday after France have beaten them. That would be so good.

FYI the commentator Patrick Gower is not a Rugby Pundit, he is a political hack that knows nothing about rugby and was part of the corrupt nz media that took money from the Govt for positive news stories. Jeff Wilson and this show is sponsored by NZ Rugby so are never critical of the ABs. Our independent media outlets, not paid for by NZ Rugby were highly critical--this show is a bit of a joke over here.

Funny! Nice one, Tim! I must say, I've seen scores of comments from NZ supporters who downright slated The Breakdown and apologized on behalf of NZ. They also complimented the Springboks on a well-deserved win. SO, I concur. The fans handled it great but the pundits had a mental meltdown. Fans at the game said the atmosphere was electric and Twickenham was buzzing. I personally did not get bored watching the game on the telly. Perhaps the pundits are on some combination of speed, cocaine and caffeine that the game bored them to death. Most of the stoppages were from penalties requiring set piece play which points to lack of discipline. TMO's always take time but in my opinion the way the bunker system works is awesome as it does not add time to the TMO or referee decision and every single bunker decision came so quickly when the ref called it on the field that you could easily miss it. In fact, I think the bunker system may well shorten TMO times if used properly. So, if the pundits want the game to flow more, they should advocate for teams to maintain stricter discipline in their gameplay. I wonder how many minutes of the 107 minute game were due to infringements or penaltiesand the following set piece preparation versus the actual time taken for TMO decisions. Perhaps The Breakdown could divulge that those stats to us too. I hardly ever watch The Breakdown as I find the commentators overbearing and pompous. I get my commentary from Eggchasers, Brenden Nel, The Black Jersey, Alfred Reynolds, Squidge, TAS Analytics, Two Cents, World Rugby, Wildkard and Inside Rugby with Mark Philpott. They are not all balanced, but you go out of your way to keep your comments as fair as you can give them, so thank you for that.

As a French fan, so a neutral viewpoint, I agree with Tim….Jeff Wilson and Co blame the ref, the bunker, etc…sorry guys…although the ABs is still a great team, the current refs are now applying the same rule for everybody, without exception. That said, Scott Barrett s lucky coz he could have been sent off directly without the bunker decision. As a younger boy, I used to support NZ after france. Also saw a lot of people complain about the 7-1 split and I don’t see how that’s a problem because it’s a big risk from our side too, had it not happened worked out for the Boks then no one was gonna complain about it but now that people have seen how well it worked and maybe they see that on a good day no forward pack would be able to stand up to the Springboks then “World Rugby has to do something about it “ that’s just ridiculous. First up, I really like your channel. No gimmicks, no silly stats, just a genuine rugby lover sharing his knowledge and opinions. Keep it up. As for "the breakdown". I was first made aware of this show after somebody sent me a link in the aftermath of the Irl - NZ game in Chigago in 2017 and I thought " what a condescending bunch of arrogant as*****. I always switch them on after a N.Z defeat - the tripe they come out with is hilarious at times. Particularly enjoyable is their reaction to Sonny Boy Williams getting a red v the LIONS and of course the 2nd test in the Summer series v Ireland where a certain Jaco Peyper is literally hung drawn and quartered. Every so often they have a decent pundit - Isaac Bent & Jarred Payne spring to mind but the majority of the time it's more like a sit com than a serious sport show. True words. I was flabbergasted with their commentary and reactions, especially Jeff Willson. What if the Scott Barrett infringement was committed by PSTD, Eben or Duane? I expected more humility and professionalism. The source of their behavior can only be fear and doubt of their team’s ability to go all the way in WC23.

The breakdown is rarely good. It feels less a channel reporting on New Zealand centric rugby news and more a faux news station akin to Fox in the USA. They're top down direction is intent on drumming up opinion and influencing public discourse purely in a game to game fashion in benefit of the All Blacks. A few bad eggs can sour the whole bunch. James Parsons is probably the best pundit in NZ and is worth far more than everyone on the breakdown combined. Worth an invite to your podcast!

LOL this just popped up in my 'recommended' and I had to keep checking the time stamp to check that you were not talking about the final. Nothing changed at all - the team who knocked the ball on 12 times in their 19 turnovers, turned down points at goal and kicked 2 from 4 kicks, still could not bring themselves to blame themselves or their discipline issues, but rather put the loss firmly at the feet of the officials for a game they had every chance to win but simply turned down the chances.

You forgot one thing though, they blame everyone except the all black players themselves, Barrett went off feet to a player not competing for the ball, which is foul play and any good pundit should have asked what is the mitigating factors since the rule says if it is foul play and intentional there are no mitigating factors, which was exactly what Barrett had done. So it should have been straight red. We have seen red cards before for something like this. He went in with the shoulder as well, which means his actions were always illegal.

@@nzfreeski Sure, i totally agree, but I was not speaking about the official World Rugby ranking, but rather the top3 based over performance over the past year or 2. For example, I don't know if you have seen this year's Ireland-France game at the 6 Nations: arguably the best rugby match I've seen in a long time, with a rugby played at a level and with an intensity that was truly amazing. Now that being said, this is a tournament and you always have surprises in a tournament, so we'll see. Opening match is in 7 days and looking at your tag name, we'll be on 2 sides of the supporting fence for that one (I'm French 😁).. That win was one of South Africa's best ever wins, at least in the last decade or so. That performance was unbelievable, England's semi win in 2019 beats it though cuz of the stakes. But the Boks basically did what England did to NZ in 2019, utter domination
@saml2621
@saml2621 Жыл бұрын
I mostly agree with this, although I think this performance from the Boks was even more dominant than that 2019 semi. It felt like I was watching a helpless puppy get beaten senseless, I don't think the scoreline did that game justice, it really should have been 50+ to the Boks.

That's true - I watched the FULL replay of that semi final in 2019 about a week ago and witnessed just that - utter domination by England in ALL aspects of the game and the AB's only got onto the scoreboard because of an inaccurate throw in by England which was the easiest try anyone will score in a semi final of the WC - i'm actually going to find the episode of "The Breakdown" after that semi final to see what these muppet pundits had to say then...

Tim please don’t recant your views if you get some blowback…you’re spot on. And more so, coming from a neutral, it is so much more telling. I get the distinct feeling that the New Zealand public and the AB team themselves are not whinging and whining like JW and the weasel in the tweed coat…very poor! As regards it being the best the Springboks can play…well I’m not so sure about that at all. Whilst we have yet to match the guile of the French and the finesse of the AB backs, I’ve seen a definite and continued improvement in backline play by SA. I was also particularly proud of the manner in which Mannie Libbok played as well. He was copping, and justifiably, some serious flak in SA prior to Friday’s game. AB’s are a class team…the Breakdown though is trying to give credence to an ‘alternate reality’ much like Fox News does for politics in the US. SA supporter
