A short video from Eggleston, and one of many hopefully as Thomas, Lisa, Elizabeth, Helen and George go through the year in what is a very challenging climate for the horticultural industry and especially nurseries.

George is an amazing knowledgeable teacher, so personable and at ease in front of a camera; good job whoever hired him. Sad face, no Thomas. Thanks for the video Malcolm, good to see Eggleston doing well.

WOW! For that amount of information GW would need three Friday nights! Thanks for taking us back to Egglestone and introducing George, which seems to be a very driven horticulturist/vegetable grower. Please, keep these videos coming.

I'll never forget my trip to Egglestone, it was amazing! The quality of the plants for sale, [at really reasonable prices too] and standing beneath that fabulous centuries old tree..I've forgotton what sort of tree it was, so sorry🤔and being served by the lovely Lisa! And Amelias studio...Amazing day we had! Wonderful strong plants too, a really great experience. In a beautiful setting, I hope to get back there some day though we've moved further south now so it's a full days travel to get there. So pleased you're doing these videos Malcolm, I feel it keeps me 'connected' to Egglestone. I spotted Thomas, John and of course Lisa on our visit...it was like seeing royalty!😆

Thrilled to see Eggleston again and am looking forward to seeing George again in a month. You'll have to slot Thomas in there somewhere.

Eggleston should hang on to George, he could be poached by the BBC because he would do a much better job at presenting Gardeners World than at present! So knowledgeable but comes over as a great personality 👍🏼😀 Loved this Malcolm, we still need plenty of you but is lovely to catch up at Egglestone too 👍🏼

I would very much like to see both Thomas and George presenting Gardeners World. They make a very good pairing. Obviously they lack my subtle charm and smiley enthusiasm, and need to curb their language…..but these things can be learnt. Seriously, I think with a little encouragement from people on here we could make some great videos to set them on their way……Very best wishes…Malcolm

I've heard that with allium they want to be quite shallow only the hair like roots want dirt around them , not the bulbs themselves. My uncle pulls the dirt away as it grows and his are beautiful...
@plantsmanscorner1282 ай бұрын
I’ve always grown them on the deeper side…mainly to stop bird pulling them out, especially sparrows dust bathing and others using the old brown stem of sets for nesting material….you can cut them back a bit, but they can also be attracted to the dried brown outer skins….this may have been a problem back in the day when there were many many times more songbirds….as a boy gardeners could catch 50 bullfinches a day in a bully trap….now you rarely see one….they were once a huge pest, especially of fruit farms….best wishes….Malcolm

Do the roots of the stepover apples interfere with the roots of the vegetables along the edge of the veg patch?
@petery67752 ай бұрын
what is that apple fence ? around each bed. how that variety called ?
@joshaw2 ай бұрын
Step over apples, Malcolm has great info in a video about managing. Need super dwarfing rootstock.
@plantsmanscorner1282 ай бұрын
They are just step over apples Peter….an ordinary maiden apple cut back to a height you want the boundary and pruned as a single tier espalier. it’s all in the pruning, and you can use any variety of apple you want but spur bearing as opposed to tip bearing varieties are best (which is most)…..maidens are cheaper and you can ask your nursery supplier or check online if spur or tip bearer. Best wishes…..Malcolm

Thank you Malcolm …what a nice surprise … 2 videos in one week! I am a bit confused - Is Eggleston still a nursery? Is Clara working somewhere else now? She deserved a medal 😂
@kalayne67132 ай бұрын
Clara was the original English Rose. I hope she is happy wherever she is. Same with Amanda and her poems. What a great group they were, but George is very knowledgeable. Quite the find. Thomas used to amaze me with HIS knowledge at such a young age.I even miss your salty humour, Malcolm. From Australia.

Loved the talk but it looks like the walkways and the place in general looks overgrown.As if it's not being kept up. But more visits with George would be great.

Eggleston Hall and it’s estates are up for sale Maria…..have been for nearly a year. Once that happens, depending on the new owners, there will be only 12 months left. Many things are based on a 3 year cycle from propagation to saleable plant, so therefore the uncertainty means cutbacks and prioritising. As a nursery the income is derived solely from plants so they have to take precedence. These are very uncertain times for the whole horticultural industry, especially Eggleston with its remote location and not having other income streams like garden centres have. So if you have £3.5 million there is a good opportunity going!…..Best wishes….Malcolm.
@mariapascualy2598Ай бұрын
@@plantsmanscorner128 So sorry to hear that.Hope the new owners are amenable to keeping the garden and nursery. And that the crew gets all the help they need. I have a wild yard but I was used to the formal garden feel of your place and was concerned....
