The green flashing LED is explained in the manual. It means that the battery is discharging to 30% charge level for storage. It is supposed to do this discharge after 30 days being off the charger, but yours is malfunctioning. My guess is that the timer chip on the BMS has failed, or a component that sets its timer interval or a short or failure on a nearby discrete component so that it begins this discharge cycle immediately. Another thing you could have found out would be to wait to see if the BMS stops the discharge at 30% as it is supposed to. If it drops below 30% charge level at about 50v pack voltage then the failure is also causing it to continue draining the cells to failure. However if you always keep it on the charger between uses it will continue to work like normal. If it does stop discharging at 30% then you could just continue to use it without risking over discharging and failure of the cells if you ever leave it off the charger, but it will only have 30% if not kept on the charger.

In my experience overheating is one of the biggest killer of the cells. This is one reason I really like the additional step engineered in these batteries for cooling. The battery management system (BMS) if working correctly will not allow the battery to overheat or over discharge without shutting down. I personally still charge mine after modest use even if still showing above 25% but I feel it's just good practice.

After owning and using EGO batteries for several years what are your thoughts on them?
@ThriftyToolShed4 жыл бұрын
I really like the arc lithium design. One of the only ones to engineer the packs to help with cooling. The cooling, spacing and the phase changing sleeves are all vast improvements to me over the common tight brick design. I have seen lots of issues with the BMS unfortunately. To be fair since they are the only pack I have seen to actually monitor the temp of each cell, balance each cell and several other temperature monitoring. One on the board and 1on each pack half as well. So I guess they are pretty complex so maybe some BMS issues should not be a surprise. The 2 things going forward for me is if they will continue the good warranty replacement that they have been known for so far for me and also if the newer BMS design they have, hopefully it does fix alot of the past issues. My thoughts so far! I really have not seen any other platform that can truly compete with the pack design. I do hope more companies push to design better packs in the same manner. Competition is great!

Also, we never really keep stuff, but snap a pic of ur receipt (or if its online, save it somewhere) take a pic of ur serial number and then you have proof in the future, in the event they claim you never registered it if u in fact did. Also, I'm sure other brands do this too. Ego, of you buy a mower with 2 batteries and a charger or a blower with batteries and charger, those items will all match up. I.e. it be 12345S for the mower and charger and the batteries will be 12345A 12345B so its pretty cool how well they even thought out the serial numbers. I was pretty impressed so far with everything. The mower is excellent quality. I truly don't believe the advantage to be not dealing with oil changes or tune ups as most lawn mowers will run for 10 years doing nothing but adding fuel, at least in my case they all have, n I usually buy cheaper ones that have a standard Briggs and straton motor. Anyway, the advantage is just simply having something quiet. Something anyone can use. Something you can store for long periods without much use and it will always work, like a snowblower or something. Eventually those little engines will need a full rebuild or replace when they start burning oil n then never run again. My point, is that I have a small property and having large gas items makes no sense. I still have my gas trimmer, but one day when it goes, I will replace it with an ego. I have had it for 4 years now and only use the pre mixed non ethanol fuel. If O mixed it myself id have gas that is 4 years old as i have probably only used a gallon or 2 total since buying it. This is when battery operated stuff excells. Also, when storing lipo batteries long term, they're not meant to be stored fully charged even though everyone does. Now, for regular use, fine. If its sitting for 3 months, the same way you get the battery is how it should be stored, with 2 bars max if u have the new ones. That will prolong the use tremendously.
@ThriftyToolShed2 жыл бұрын
The EGO packs will self discharge if in storage with no use over 30 days. It's a built in feature to help with this issue of packs stored long term fully charged. It's unfortunate if you have the Nexus power station though and wish to have the packs fully charged and ready if needed. You will have to stay on top of it and charge them every so often to be ready.

What can you say about the self discharge feature...I noticed after 30 days it would go into self discharge in order to protect itself. I noticed when the button started flashing. Since I didn't know what was going on I pressed the green button. That made it stop the self discharge process and it waited another thirty days to start the discharge all over again. There is not anything in the manual about this...at least that I found...Only that it will start a self discharge mode after 30 days. Anyway, I'm still figuring this out.
@ThriftyToolShed3 жыл бұрын
Yes the manual is very vague and I believe it is several different versions of the manual and one that I downloaded to share with someone did not mention the Discharge at all. As far as I know the blinking green after 30 days in storage is the indication of the discharge down to 30%. I have not seen any other manufactures pack do this. Apparently Lithium ion cells do not like being stored fully charged and for longer life it is recommended not to store for long periods fully charged and I guess that is why most cells or packs we buy new are below 50% charged. I always thought the manufacturer was just being cheap, saving charge time and electricity, LOL. I really am not a fan of this and I wonder if the newer packs ( I call them Gen3) with the fuel gauge actually still has the feature? The 2 cons to this: People with Nexus power stations full of fully charged packs ready for a power outage do not want all packs to discharge to 30% before they use it. The other issue is the Gen2 boards like mine are bad about that transistor shorting out and it causes the pack to constantly be drain all the way to zero and ruins the pack. I don't think it helps as much as it hurts. So I am hoping the new packs don't have it, but I am unsure?

@@ThriftyToolShed Thanks for response. Just a note. The pack that I have that appears to have gone through a discharge cycle is a 2.5 AH EGO weed trimmer I bought new in spring 2019 that has the segmented circle fuel cell. Gen 3 maybe? After stopping the discharge twice by pressing the button...each 30 days apart...the third time I just let it do it's thing...So the button flashed red at ten second intervals, on ten seconds, off ten seconds...for about an hour before stopping. When I finally pressed the fuel gauge button again it was a two green bars.... Side note, I just bought the 16" chainsaw with 5.0AH battery in Dec 2021. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't come with segmented fuel button.

Thrifty Tool Shed sorry I was saying if someone had a 3D printer made plastic parts and and Cir board and battery cell buying separate how much do you think it may cost then buying a battery from store 163.00 for a 2.5 amp battery could it be cheaper
@ThriftyToolShed4 жыл бұрын
@@davidpetrusewicz8172 I really don't think so. Just due to the cost of the 14 2500mah cells in the 2.5ah pack or the 28 in the 5.0ah pack since they are premium cells. Genuine cells of this grade would be maybe $8-10 each. Of course we have another issue as well. If you wish to use it on the EGO tools the BMS must talk to the tool trough the D-terminal (as mentioned in another video about the D-terminal). So that has been a challenge to figure out and would not matter if simply wanting a 56V pack for other projects such as a e-bike etc. I have actually bought many of these packs as parts or non working just to get the cells from them because they are expensive. That is how I get my spares, tested used cells from bad packs that have great capacity. Always good to think out of the box as you have here for sure!

HI, I have uploaded the video now. I am sorry i do not know the info on the cells. I was sure that I would have to go that deep in the cells the way they discharged. But even though my cells did get pulled down below a safe level for them (due to the bad component) the batteries balanced out and held a charge very well. After several tests all my batteries are holding strong.I will be surprised if eventually i do not have to get into the cells as deep as you have mentioned above.
