Thank you for the review. I just bought the 15 inch version for $179 at Lowe’s yesterday-there was an end of summer sale. This is my third trimmer since 2021 as the first one (Ryobi) lasted for only two summers and the Kobalt lasted for barely one summer. Both the Ryobi and Kobalt broke while I was trying to adjust the string-very complicated adjusting the string. I spent the past few months doing research on trimmers and I think this is the best one for me as it is designed to be easy to reload the string. I am pretty certain I will be ok. Thank you again for the awesome demonstration/review of this product!

I just picked that one up last week, got her going and was a little disappointed the battery died so quick and the head was vibrating quit a bit like it was out of balance. Then on my second try the bearings started making noise so it's going back to the store today! I did like the power compared to my 40c kobalt but my kobalt is already four years old and still going strong with heavy use. I found a lot of articles about these ego motor bearings exploding within 3 yes because they don't have any grease. I think if I get another one I'm going to tear apart the motor and grease the bearings and see if I can figure out what kind they take to keep on hand for the long haul because I don't like people touching my stuff even though it would be free replacement under warranty.

@@macristo33 well I decided to take the head apart before returning it and there was a piece of plastic rattling around in there that turned into a little ball that sounded just like dry ball bearings so I decided to keep it for now. I do like the power it has but I have a lot of property and very big weeds so I'm debating on getting another one or just a battery depending on the cost.

Probably an obvious question but how much maintenance, if any, have you had to do with ego products. I’m looking to start an all electric lawn care business. 1. So I can save money in gas but 2. Is mainly due to me not being very mechanically smart. Where I work now we just send all our equipment to the mechanic 😂

We got one of these at work. Here's what I don't like 1. no bumpfeed, autofeed is crap and doesn't work. 2. the head spins the wrong way!! All professional linetrimmers in the industry spin anti clockwise 3. the whole unit isn't long enough so you're stooping over 4. the battery is waaay too heavy. We have 10ah batteries and they last a long time but weigh a ton 5. the safety trigger mechanism is a pain in the arse

If you are cutting your lawn at 7am, a lot of times that early the grass has lots of dew on it. Supposedly when the grass is wet it doesn't get a good clean cut on the blade of the grass, especially St Augustine. You will see the tips of the blade jagged and brownish

You neglected to mention the simplicity of reloading the line. Just cut a thirteen foot piece of line off the huge spool you can buy separately (it’s a great deal to), stick it straight through the two holes in the head, push the auto-load button and it automatically winds the line into the head! No removing heads, trying to figure out which way to wind the thread, no winding line or hassling with sticking it through the holes when putting the spool back… all the BS involved with gas trimmers GONE! Far superior to my expensive Echo gas trimmer! I got the blower too and it’s amazing! And the batteries charge SUPER fast!

It is not the spark plug, it’s the carb that’s the problem. I have the lower end EGO (no carbon fiber handle, no auto line feed and no auto line load but the same power head and battery). Bought it on sale on Amazon three years ago for I think around $125, essentially the cost of the battery. Easily gets through the trimming on my 15000 sq ft property, probably about 30 minutes of trimming a mow.

Nice video! I just bought the same model. Still $299 at Lowe’s and they gave me a free 5-pack of string. You asked whether gas or electric is a better value. To which I say “it depends” The average homeowner isn’t going to do proper maintenance, nor will be able/willing to do things like clean the air filter or have tools to change a spark plug. never mind adjusting or service a carburetor. I bet the majority of homeowners have water in their gas by spring, leading to a trip to the repair shop. So for the vast majority of homeowners, electric should be the clear choice. If you change your own oil or service your brakes, then you’re in a much smaller pool of homeowners than average. And if you’re in the lawn care business, then it’s a different ball game entirely where you have to balance uptime vs. maintenance costs but can also amortize equipment costs on your taxes.

The Ego is used around the house and barn, basically till the battery dies. The string loading feature is nicely done.

Ive slowly transitioned to all ego stuff for my yard. Most definitely worth it. No oil( minus the chainsaw), no gas, no spark plugs. Maintenance still exists but most of the time its for consumables. Like most people think a battery dieing is a problem. But anything you see is a minority compared to the whole. And if your worried about it. Buy it new and registor the tool immediately. If your buying it used your taking a risk. So far my stuffs been rock solid. The only thing i keep around is my old gas mower. When i need to mow down a couple feet of weeds :) ( just kept around for the abuse).

Every season (sometimes 2x a season) my Toro trimmer would go down. I inherited it from Dad with the pull mechanism melted (?) ordered parts and fixed it. Next, the diaphram in the carburetor stiffened up and I replaced that. Next, the fuel lines degraded. This year, the pull mechanism was stuck and wouldn't pull out all the way. Fixed that but for some reason, it vibrated so badly my hands were getting numb. That was it. Got an Ego. I have a small yard and it's been great.

JSYK, there's two different ways to get more time on that trimmer. I personally have the smaller trimmer but with an acre-plus yard, the 2.5Ah battery that came with it is too small AND I tend to use the same battery for my 750cfm blower. As such, and in having multiple different Ego hand-held tools, I tend to primarily use a 7.5Ah battery that came with my Ego hand mower, which allows me to even use a hand-held tiller for my flower gardens, hand-held snow thrower for my sidewalk and even a long-handled 10" chain saw for cutting back heavier brush. With also having an Ego Z6 42" Zero-turn mower, I can mow the entire acre-plus on SIX 10Ah batteries on one charge (with an approximate 4-hour recharge time IF you let the batteries cool down before recharging, but which also gives me easy access to those larger batteries if a heavy project comes up. I find the heavier batteries decidedly improve the balance of all of the hand tools to make them easier to handle, compared to the 4Ah and smaller ones.I've been using these tools AND the two-stage snow blower for three years now, though the snow blower saw no use in the first year of ownership. Additionally, 12Ah batteries are available, which would extend the mower's range to roughly 1.5 acres or more and probably a full day's work with any hand tool AND there's a backpack unit that can hold two batteries (any size) to power any hand tool. Not counting Ego's newest professional landscaper machines.

Other than the click bait title, this was a really good review. I've been using the previous high end model with the carbon fiber handle and auto loading feature with 15" size. Mine came with a 2.5ah battery, not the 4ah and didn't have line IQ. I have to bump out the line. So far I've had no issues with that, except when the line was nearly empty. That was a big upgrade compared to the wired Black and Decker trimmer, which wouldn't feed correctly, even with a brand new head.

I was able to find the carbon fiber combo kit with the interchangable trimmer and edger attachments. The discounted price was $364.00 new and with tax it pushed it up to around $390.00. It came with one 56V battery and charger. I would recommend this product from Ego as there are an array of additional attachments that can be used with this kit. A pole saw, hedge trimmer, and tiller are just a few of the attachments one can purchase separately should the need ever arise. I think in the long run one will be better served to buy the new system now offered by Ego in 2024 instead of having the individual power tool(s) that only perform one function each. Cheers.

My old one you have to twist the head to wind, which is not easy but I manage to do it. I really don't like the new safety switch but I will get use to it. I bought the second one for the battery. Mine are both 2.5 amp batteries so I need both to do my yard, and then some. But I would not mind having a 4 amp battery. Maybe I'll buy a chainsaw or blower in the future.

That safety switch is annoying to me as well. I checked mine and it’s a 4 Ah battery. Lasts a decent while.

For trimming battery is fine. Brush cutter not so much. Also battery trimmers are heavy and they should include a strap IMHO.

I just bought the 15 inch. Bumping the unit on the ground failed to feed more line. Removing all of the line and reloading did nothing. I'm giving this a week before I take this back to Lowes for a refund.

Did you end up returning it? I just got mine today, and not sure that I like it. I'm also not used to so much power. I used a black and decker for the past 11 years, and that seemed to have been fine. Starting to wonder why I really wanted the upgrade anyway. haha

The biggest factor for me was that the EGO doesn’t emit greenhouse gases. Two-stroke engines are among the worst polluters.

I've used a wheeled weedwacker for almost 20 years. They are awesome. I just bought a Ryobi 40 volt hand weedwacker for tighter areas. It's pretty heavy but I will pace myself.(probably will never run out of battery 😄) I'm 73.

electric is the way to go. i've got ryobi stuff and a small yard to take care of. usually i can do the weed eating and use the same battery in the mower and be all done on one 4ah battery. set up some solar panels, power station and charge the battery off that, eliminates even paying for the electricity to take care of the yard.

I’ve noticed after making this video that the batteries seem to be compatible for all of this EGO gear, so if someone picks up a few different tools they’ll have extra batteries which could go a long way for bigger jobs.

How much actual time did you get using the trimmer, 45 minutes, an hour?

Hi, I didn’t measure the actual run time, but it’s more than enough to trim all of the area you saw in the video. I’m still using it a year later with no issues.

Exactly what I want to know. Time. How long did it run from full battery to blinking lite. Surely you must know on average how long it takes you to trim out your property?

Makes sense. My experience with gas powered weed eaters is dated, so I would need to change spark plugs just about every season. I can imagine things have gotten much better. Luckily, this electric one just works when I squeeze the trigger. The battery lasts just about as long as I need in the yard.

When you go to buy an extra or replacement battery, you will find it costs as much or even more than the entire kit (trimmer plus battery) did. This was a major turn off for me and is something I would figure into my purchase decision when my current EGO has to be replaced. I have no love for companies that rip you off like this when you need a replacement part. It literally would have been cheaper for me to just buy another full kit when I looked into buying a spare battery a couple years ago (not this model, I think the kit cost me $199 and the battery replacement would have cost a little over $200).

You lost me the moment you said spark plugs have a limited life. Technically true but unless you're using your trimmer commercially, you're unlikely to replace it as a home owner. Spark plugs are very cheap to replace as well.

Well, they do have a certain lifespan, whatever it is. They can also be fouled up by adding too much oil to the two-stroke mix. I agree that with normal use a spark plug can last a very long time but it is still another potential point of failure. I once bought a new gas string trimmer and it just wouldn't start. It took me half an hour of trying out different things, faffing about with chokes and carburetors, until discovering that the spark plug didn't go all the way in when you thought it did. An easy fix... once you knew what to fix :(

Got sick and tired of my Stihl whacker and its annual disposable carburetor and sick of reloading string 3-4 times in my yard. Got the Ego and I'm not going back. Did the yard with string to spare, and not one restart needed!

I would have to spend $500 more on my mower, $200 more on my trimmer, $250 more on my blower than my petrol setup AND $1200 more on batteries up front (not including recharging costs) to be able to take care of my 3/4 acre block. That's A LOT of extra up front cost. A commercial Honda mower and a commercial Stihl trimmer and blower work out to be much cheaper long-term and deliver better performance, especially the mower has a cleaner cut.

Your math ain't mathing for me. The Ego push mower runs $500-$800, similar to a Honda. The Ego trimmer costs about $180, similar to other major gas brands. The blower costs $300. They come with batteries, although you can buy them without batteries for less. On top of all that, there's almost no maintenance. These things will run for 10 years without much trouble. Yes, Ego is somewhat of a premium brand and you pay for that, but it can go toe to toe with gas powered brands. For me it's been worth it.

You keep talking about messing with a spark plug for a gas weed eater? Let’s be real most people who buy a brand new gas weed eater don’t have to change spark plugs, carbs or anything for at least 5 years. my guess is the ego won’t last that long and that’s the one thing I have questions about is the reliability
