Rarified is the air where a musician can take a little masterpiece from a great composer like Michel Colombier and, with profound simplicity and tenderness, make it his own. An unforgettable tune, one that conjures hope and regret, and the profound mark on music Jaco possessed that will certainly stay on loan with us and the generations that will follow us, as well. WE were the lucky ones though, to have lived in his time and to have witnessed his genius first hand! Thanks for posting this! :)
@niceanddestroyed5 жыл бұрын
I think you underestimate the work of Michel Colombier (when you say "little masterpiece") I am sorry to say that, but that tune would have existed without Jaco Pastorius, even if it is obvious that Jaco adds a lot to the interpretation and that the record would have been different without him. The work on sound, timbres and string arrangements is very precise, delicate and more complex than it seems in the first place. You can find also some melancholy and profundness that is already present in Colombier's previous work (like for instance on Emmanuel on the Wings LP), which is clearly coming from his own life story and personal musical universe. It is also a bit simple to give all the greatness to Jaco, considering that Colombier plays all the keyboards on this one, that he wrote every note of it and also considering the great personnel on this LP (Steve Gadd, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, etc.). I still love Jaco's part on this one, but i am a bit sad to remark that composers are often underrated, barely mentioned, especially on KZbin where most of the time, they are not even credited. Musical interprets are part of music, but composers are at least an equivalent part of it, if not the most important part of it.

@@niceanddestroyed But make sure you recognize Pastorius's genius wasn't just his bass contributions but his ability for composure! Make no mistake Michel collaborated on this piece with Jaco! If for nothing else the time signatures are pure Jaco!
