EHX Flatiron fuzz vs the Proco Rat 2 | Did I Buy The Same D**m Pedal Twice!?!?

Not mentioning chip differences, The proper way to compare the rat versus the flat iron fuzz is to make sure you turn the filter on one of the pedals in the opposite direction. Flatiron is set up like a white face rat, meaning the filter controls are reversed from a standard rat. Turning it to 3:00 on the rat is like turning the flat iron to 9:00. Those are the equal values. Turning them both to 3:00 would not equal the same settings.

Great Demo! I was wondering what the difference was. I have the Flat Iron and I like that it’s a more reasonable “Fuzztortion”. I do think it might shine with an EQ or EQ/Boost pedal after it, like the JHS clover

@Fostext what a coincidence, I just moved and that was the first pedal I messed around with. I got a couple amps but I put it through a Vox with the drive low enough on both the pedal and amp and that bad boy shimmers, but with balls you know? I got the clover too. Things pretty nice. @@submarinemedia8316 oh very cool! I don’t have the Clover yet, but it’s going to be my next purchase. And I know what you mean, yeah the Flatiron has some good low end. And that’s cool you are cascading the Vox’s drive with the Flatiron’s. I’ve been experimenting with that as well, trying out 2 at a time, all with their drive low: The Orange Getaway Driver, The Wampler Tumnus mini, and the Flatiron fuzz. Cheers brother 🍻

Flatiron fuzz has been on my radar for some time. Loving the low end and it keeps the clarity. Ugh, I guess I'll be buying another fuzz pedal!! 😜

I thought I'd be getting rid of one of them but even though that have a nice filter, each one has a different tone. Rates a classic, but I actually really like the flat iron with just it and an amp nothing else.

Reading the comments I'm starting to think the difference is in the rubber feet not being on the bottom of the Rat? But I agree the Flatiron seems to be fuller, fatter, and on my wishlist!

The pedals have different chips in them. The Flatiron I have has an LM741 chip and the Rats come with OP07OD chips and yes, they are very different.

You are missing the rubber feet on the rat. Thinking of getting a flatiron to replace my rat. I don't like the rat by itself at all. I just use it through a big mouth to bring out the highs and then a G7 after both to bring in the mids. Just ordered down op amp reissue big muff. Was hoping maybe it gets the sound that I do using three pedals. Was thinking maybe that and a rat. I don't know I'm rambling

Totally cool to ramble my friend. I like the rat better personally because I think it has more character and it’s nasty to me anyways. Did you mean you use rat through a “Big Muff” or is there a yoga “Big Mouth” pedal cause if there is that sounds awesome.

This is unusual. I’ve heard the Rat sound much better than this. Maybe he got a lemon or perhaps his amp doesn’t respond well to the Rat.

The issue is that Unity gain on the RAT is actually around 3 o'clock. Being an old design, like the TS808, it has some volume issues. I have no doubt the Flat Iron is better because they can take what works on the Rat II and improve it, where the Rat II is a 35 year old design that people would rage if they changed in any noticeable way.

Filter knob on the flat iron works like on the white face (meaning it's reversed from the rat 2). To match tonally you would need to move the rat filter not left as you move the flat iron filter knob right.

I think, as others have stated, it’s the chips. If I remember correctly, the Flatiron claims to have the same chip that’s in the original RAT (which I think they’ve switched out with newer versions). I know there are some clones out there with that same chip that people speak highly of, like the Mooer Black Secret, which I think is under $60. I’m betting that’s why they sound as different as they do, but I could be way off the mark. I go back and forth whether to get a Flatiron, a Black Secret, or a Soul Food/ Klon Centaur clone.

to answer your question, no you didnt. manufacturers will do their own versions of a popular circuits, and usually make their own tweaks. on top of that, even same brand/model pedals can vary from each other because of component differences.
