Hi I have a religious question that’s been causing my family great distress. The question is: why is sex before marriage considered bad? What is logically bad about, for example, loving a woman, having sexual with her before marriage, and then being married to her? If sex before marriage is a problem of lust, what if it is love but you are not married? If sex before marriage is a problem of not developing a proper family and the woman will just find someone else, what if it’s true love and she doesn’t and you get married after?

What is marriage? In Islam, marriage is a contract between the woman and the man. A first opinion as to why premarital relations is not allowed is to save the human being from being discontent. In the future, you might be married to a great woman, but maybe there is something about her that doesn’t satisfy you the same way the women in your premarital relations did? This might be physically or spiritually. Islam does not want the human being to act like an animal - getting up and moving onto a new partner based on whim - which is how the relationship scene seems to be today with apps like tinder and the dating culture in society. Instead, developing and growing with somebody despite their faults is a true form of love, especially going through hard times with them and finding comfort in one another. Of course, Islam doesn’t say to blindly marry someone; you get to know them in a proper way to see how she is with her family, her personality, etc, before marriage. Yet if we were allowed to come and go whenever we pleased in relationships, maybe your wife can’t offer you the same enjoyment physically as a previous relationship you were in, and that bothers your mind. Now the relationship takes a toll and the structure of the family is weakened.
