Eidul-Fitr is a festival of celebrations and spreading goodness. Different regions around the world celebrate the day in their own unique ways. But how did the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions celebrate Eid?
The first thing Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) did was eat an odd number of dates. Then He (PBUH) and his companions would offer Zakat Al-Fitr before going to the mosque to offer Eid prayers. Then He (PBUH) would wear his special Yemeni cloak that he wouldwear on the two Eids and every Friday.
After offering the prayers, he would return by a route different from the one he took to approach the mosque. The major part of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’s Eid was not eating or feasting, but praying and thanking Allah for his countless blessings.
He (PBUH) would also visithis friends and family members, accepting their hospitality and would receive guests, feed and entertain them
The Prophet (PBUH) placed more emphasis on visiting the sick on Eid
He (PBUH) would also greet children and help the poor on the joyous occasion
What does all of it teach us?
That the Prophetic tradition of celebrating Eid is less about partying, and more about spreading happiness, mending ties, helping the poor, and knowing our duties towards God and his creation.
Happy Eidul-Fitr
