A few years at most. Construction of the first prototype started in 1938, but as they showed here, it took years to get that operational and even longer before it produced halfways acceptable results. Of course they needed some time to make this documentary, too. However, in 1944 the technology still was very recent and not mature yet. The first commercial installations did not occur before 1958.
