I had an unusual interaction with 2 jumping spiders, one I found by the back door in my old house earlier this year. it was sitting on the corner of this cabinet eye level with me, I got fairly close to it and it kinda backed away in fear so I left I came back later that day and it was still on the cabinet so I was looking at real close and doing things to try to get a reaction, I walked around it to try to get behind it and it was slowly turning following my head and face, then I acted like my hand was a spider and started to walk it up the side of the cabinet and it got obviously frightened by it and ran down the side and hid. I think I came back the next day and it was still there around that area but I left it alone. Something about it seemed different from web making spiders that's for sure and that experience changed the way I look at jumping spiders. Last month I almost crushed the second one in my car door, I noticed it was sitting right above the door ontop of the car, I wasn't worried about it so I just opened the door and grabbed something but as I was about to close the door it walked down onto the padded seal for the door so I slowly brought the door closer to the spider and it jumped onto the door then back ontop of the car as I continued to close the door.

I had a fatty momma jumping spider living in my car for a while. That's when I realized how intelligent they are. She never bothered me. If I tried to interact with her she would back up like "hey now, quit it." So I just let her be. I was taking a friend home one night when she decided to take a walk across the dashboard. Luckily, he never noticed her. She was fairly large and I was worried buddy would freak out if he saw her haha.

Wolfy: if you breed these delightful spider, you must have an insight on any intelligence they seem to have. Can they be kept as pets similar to fish(only as an example), which continue to live as normal as possible, but do recognize food being given to them. Sometimes, fish might actually become excited just before being fed ... they must recognize "something good is about to happen". Or, are these spiders seemingly on a slightly higher sense, enough so, to recognize that you have become an accepted part of their life?

Konomi l4 I fail to see your argument. Everyone has killed insects. It's a fact of life. At least these guys did it in the name of science, furthering our knowledge into micro-science, which we can use further in the fields of micro-robotics and space engineering. Neither venomous or non venomous spiders should be killed if at all avoidable. The very fact that you seem to insinuate that it is acceptable to kill a venomous spider purely because it is venomous shows you know nothing about arachnids. Spiders are incredibly safe creatures. They do not attack if they have no reason to. They are defensive, not aggressive, and most new world tarantulas will not attack anything that isn't food as long as it doesn't spook them. I fail to see what you are arguing for when you say they should study venomous spiders. Spiders use the venom secreted from their fangs to incapacitate their prey before storage or consumption. There is no difference, to my knowledge, in brain activity between venomous and non venomous spiders that is relatable to the world of micro-science. The jumping spider is unique in that it has eyes almost as good as ours and can see further than most, if not all, spiders. Even the largest of tarantulas cannot see more than two inches in front of them, hence why they rely on sensing vibrations and movement to hunt their prey. Perhaps next time you should take a little more time to think about the meaning behind something before you so foolishly blurt out such incoherent drivel, which frankly, can barely be considered as an intellectual opinion.

Pure proof of Darwinism. Some posters are partially correct. They have perfected symbiosis, just like dogs did. They hang around the windows and doors. The city jumping spider lines that didn't do this went extinct - a new breed of jumping spider - just like racoons . They even evolved to have more of these these "cuteness" factors". Not just for mating, but protection from these "giant humans" in a spiders way of thought.

Thank you... I was really annoyed by that. Some people have no respect for life at all. Those that are like "it's a spider" have no clue. Spiders take care of pesky bugs that can ruin gardens and crops so therefore they are okay in my book.
@1ard103
@1ard103 6 жыл бұрын
to be fair... the title of the video should make this rather clear. if you couldn't infer this conclusion from the tittle alone then you are very dense or you seek to suppress science that you find to be problematic. the argument that this is just a spider isn't countered by you bringing up the fact that hunting things to extinction is bad...... because these spiders were likely grown for this purpose.... they didn't take these spiders from the wild.... you can chill out because they arent hunting these spiders.... they are really easy to raise they are cheap to raise and they mature quickly.... as apposed to mammals. its probably the worst argument ive herd against testing on animals in general... you understand this isnt 1000s of hunters across america killing every liveing creature they see and selling there pelts right? ... these are several people in controlled environments with the purpose of furthering science... or at the very least human safety. the fact is spiders and insects alike simply dont have the capacity to feel pain as pain.... rather its more a censor that tells it to run. they dont suffer... they just aren't capable of it. think of it like how when you play a game and your character gets hurt... you can see he is getting hurt and you know that you need to change up your strategy to survive... likely you need to run away... but it would be foolish to argue that you as the player are being harmed.

Soooooo...you wanted a Trigger Warning on a video that deals in testing animals right in the title...anything else you want done to make it feel better for you? Maybe some cookies, crayons, maybe a puppy or two? Oh maybe the scientists should dress as clowns and have colorful wallpaper too! How about we give spiders citizenship and the right to prosecute you for killing other spiders in the past? I wonder how the spiders will react to the "It's ok to be white" signs. Think they'll make a big stink on the news about it? Oh and maybe they'll bring up HUMANSPREADING ON SUBWAY CARS. Stop making one spider death seem like a step to extinction. It was raised for this. As you are well aware, a LIVING BRAIN is required for the experiment. I know it sucks but hey *REALITY DOESNT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT YOUR FEEFEES* There will always be necessary evils in the world. If you believe that all the animals sat around a camp fire singing Kumbayah before humanity came in then you are probably in the wrong universe. This universe is dark and deadly. Animals eat eachother all the time in the wild, how is one death for science more cruel than 20,000 being eaten in a single day?

I mean. I agree with the emotion behind your sentiment. But...Yes? I mean life is basically a chemical reaction that has come together to self perpetuate to the point it will forcefully(predators) compromise other reaction(prey). There does come a point that there its alive, but unfeeling. I hope the spider was below this threshold. But a lot of simple insects simply don't have the complexity needed to have feeling. They are biological computers, they have inputs and programmed instructions put in over millions of years based upon which tiny minute variants survives, and which didn't. The experiment is interesting, showing known mathematical images, and seeing what the brain does would allow them to better understand how brains in general function, by mapping sector data to the inputs. This is especially valuable given how close our visual acuity is. We might one day have artificial eyes based upon this type of research. Now all that being said. Plz nu bulli spooder

At 3:30 the guy on the right is looking at the talking guy with barely concealed hilarity, as if he is about to erupt in loud guffaws at any moment about the clever joke that only he seems to understand. Then the whole video is going to explode in hysterical unrestrained laughter, like, how did the talking guy ever become a scientist? He looks more like a crazed pastry chef.

Can't the spider be taken out of a Low pressure enviroment and then go in to a high pressure enviroment along with the scientist who then as quickly as possible does the tests.I guess you would still end up putting a hole in it's head though but are they bragging that they now have the tecnology sensitive enough to measure the spider brain that they have now discovered that the spider can see what it jumps at?? An interesting goodbye thought,, I once watched through night vision a jumping spider jump on a fly in the dark?

Yeah, Jumping Spiders are the cutest. I'm an arachnophobe too lol I just find the way they move less threatening.. and they are so smart I find this cruel.. they have memories and very advanced behaviour.. I would guess if any spider was to have feelings and emotions it would be a jumping spider.

Mark Whiting probably not, they saw just the title and just virtue signalled on impulse. I'm seeing a lot of that in the comments. To be fair, the video is not titled appropriately. People expected fun facts, not a dissection or whatever this is. So it's silly blaming people for clicking on it. It would be better titled along the lines of "Connecting Probes to a Jumping Spider's Brain for Research". THEN people would be able to not click if they didn't want that content.

@xHappySnowmanx
@xHappySnowmanx 5 жыл бұрын
As far as the hole in its head goes, that was a little painful to watch. But the wax only exerts frictional force parallel to its plane. Especially given that these things are naturally engineered to repel dirt and water id like to imagine that the wax lifts away almost completely.
