I met Eddie in Katmandu in 1968 as a 23 y.o. on my first road trip through Europe, Africa and Asia. That trip changed my life forever and Eddie was a big part of that. I was so impressed at the time by his complete freedom and total lack of self-counsiesness as he did his free-style singing and dancing with his arms and hands. I was far from that kind of freedom but Eddie's obvious self freedom was a big inspiration for me and set me on my own road to freedom. Om Shant, dear brother.

I have a book written by a French guy called Charles Duchaussois. This guy went all over India and Nepal on a drug trip with hippies in the 70's. when he got out of rehab he taped the story which became a book before he died called "Flash" or "The great trip". In this book there's the portrait of Eddy eight finger. Thats awesome to read this while im looking at him in 2010..

When you spend a lot of time in India, many do become disillusioned. Thats not a bad thing. Spending 2 years in India, it has happened to me as well, so hearing Eddie speak about that resonates deeply and is true what he says. DIS- illusioned means you are no longer living IN-illusions. Coming from America to Anjuna Beach in 1993 started the ending of illusion for me and here in America there are many illusions to get through. Blind idealism is one of them. Better to see things as they are. We see through a glass darkly as it is said. Everything is distorted. We learn that.....and so we have to unlearn it. India blows it up if you can handle it. Some can't. I had dinner with Eight finger Eddie at Joe Bananas in Anjuna Beach in February 1996. He is and was everything he appears to be and I am thankful we met. RIP Eddie.

Charles Duchaussois talks about Eddie "Eight Fingers" on his book "Flash ou Le Grand Voyage", actually many times - from the scene were the fat american is messing with Eddy and his vietnamese friend till the scene were the police are after the hippie community and take Eddie to deport him from Katmandu - the question his: Is this the same Eddie from Charles ?

Yes it’s the same person . Eddie was quite a weird guy , we met him in Kathmandu with his German (? Don’t remember exactly her nationality or may be from NYC ... ) blond girl friend Rita , who died of overdose the year after . A lovely girl . Eddie was not that peaceful guy ( May be later ...) but on hard drugs like most people living there from 75 / 77 . He has no money but always found people for paying his bills .... he knew all the tricks. And the younger were fascinated by his stories ... Eddie was very smart with them flattering his ego . Well , life between Kathmandu/ Benares/ Delhi/ Goa was a little closed to Duchaussois ‘ book even Charles was far from the reality of this road even if junkies are all similar in despair and in their end .

Eddie passait son temps entre Goa et Katmandou vers 73 / 76 selon les saisons Il jouait au « dandy « à Katmandou dans les années 70 et fréquentait une pie shop dans le vieux Katmandou en face du mellow, une haschich pie shop où les stones résonnaient, conscient de son ascendant sur ceux que son ancienneté fascinait ( ils arrivaient....) , il profitait à sa manière des femmes surtout et de la générosité de ceux buvant ses paroles . Une de ses girl friend allemande est devenu accro à l’héroïne en sa compagnie et en est morte en quelques mois . N’oubliez pas que sous la nostalgie de ces années bien des voyageurs ne sont pas revenus , bad trips , overdoses . Katmandou était un paradis par rapport à l’Inde , le Pakistan car les femmes y déambulaient en paix , on pouvait y vivre pour quelques dollars, se louer une belle chambre vers la rivière ou une maison à Swayambu. À côté de cela jusqu’en 74 / 75 les voyageurs tranquilles en quête de paix et d’une vie loin des astreintes de la société sillonnaient la route d Istanbul à Katmandou ( ou Kathmandu) , Ils étaient solidaires , joyeux , sans agressivité, échangeaient les bons plans de toutes sortes , c’était bien , une sorte de grande famille . Pas d’incertitudes sur la route et dans les hôtels . Puis les drogues fortes ont fait leur apparition transformant ceux devenus addicts et sans argent en véritables prédateurs, reculants devant rien , détroussés des personnes seules en les droguants ou par le charme pour assurer leur quotidien et en dealant Le paradis est devenu une cours des miracles. Des overdoses emportant ces enfants de l’insouciance tombés dans le piège . Beaucoup d’anciens des sixties étaient accros et ne reculaient devant rien pour s’acheter leur dose . Le triste retour du bâton d’une route trop belle , légere et insouciante . Eddie n’était pas à cette époque une personne fréquentable à moins de vouloir se détruire. Après il a peut-être changé . Je parle des années 73 à 78 . Mais ceux qui y ont vécu savent tout cela . Après je comprends l’aura de ces années .
