great wisdom...imagine if tibet was a free country and his holiness Dalai lama lived in lhasa., then tibet would have been guru to the world on peace, compassion and happiness.....similar to bhutan we would have got another country with highest happiness index....but sad to see the monastaries in tibet being destroyed by CCP...tibet children being educated in chinese language instead of tibetan..I pray to thaegod that tibet will not loose its cultural identity....this is much required for the world peace.

The simple overcoming of cravings and desires isn’t the final path to enlightenment and true happiness; not as long as ignorance (due to lack of knowledge) remains. There is much to be said about love, compassion, and the transcending of one’s perceived ego, but they don’t address the lingering enigmatic and existential questions. As Aristotle put it: “All humans by nature desire understanding.” The search for understanding (e.g. Why are there beings rather than nothing?) is not a craving, it’s a natural state of being a sentient life form. Humanity, in particular, has always been plagued by its mortality and the subconscious denial of death; a malice that could be overcome via some of the practices that the Buddhist tradition promotes. Still, without knowledge, ignorance lingers and true enlightenment eludes.
