Hello there!
This video is brought to you by my backers at www.ko-fi.com/frostyarn
For the cost of a cup of coffee ($3) you can help make high quality dye education freely available to the public. Everything made in these videos is packaged up and sent to one lucky winner - this month there's 2 sets to give away, announced Friday June 14th at 7 p.m. PST . Buy me a cup of coffee and you'll be entered to win!
Dye used:
Pro chem Hot pink, turquoise, brilliant violet
Dharma flourescent orange, flourescent lemon, spearmint breeze, bright aqua, xtreme blue, midnight
Dye Stock Recipe:
1 Tablespoon dye
1 Tablespoon citric acid
2.5 cups near boiling water
** dyestock must be used within 1-2 days. Stock without citric acid can last up to 6 months (but it does start to separate and turn grainy or get a scum on the top depending on the composition of your tap water).
Superfine merino, superwash and non superwash
Here's a link to my Google drive folder with photos of the yarn/swatch/dyepot
drive.google.c...
The cost of this video:
-$121 for yarn
-2.5 hours to reskein all yarn twice & tag
-$8 in dye, citric acid, butane
-11 hours to set up, dye, film & break down for all techniques
-4 hours to photograph, edit, caption
-8.4 hours of gauge swatch knitting
-2.2 hours to edit the video footage and pix together
I wish there was a budget for a professional videographer, professional editor, a real lighting rig, and rented studio space, but alas. It's just me and my cell phone. If I spent $2500 producing this video, I'd have to put a paywall in front of it, and people who can't afford to buy in would be left out. I appreciate each and every one of you that donates, because you're helping to pay the way for someone who can't otherwise join in on the fun.
When I started out in 2008, I was desperately poor and totally enthralled. I had to start with mill ends, kool aid & a microwave. It took me 5 full years of stumbling around in the dark before I had a handle on what I was doing. I'm trying to make the indie dyer market a friendlier, more open space for the next generation. It was highly proprietary, cliquey, and exclusive when I started. And so disheartening and lonely. Thanks for helping me make it a more inviting space.

I haven't seen this answered in the comments, but if it has, I'm sorry! How would you dye multiple skeins in the same stockpot for the first few that you show? Is it possible? Thank you so much for these videos, they're really helping me to get over some mental hurdles in my imposter syndrome.
@NicoleFrostYarn
@NicoleFrostYarn 2 жыл бұрын
I don't dye multi colored skeins in stock pots but rectangular trays, 2.5" deep. You can fit 3 comfortably 5 crammed in but the dye application would be patchy. I'm not sure what your question means, exactly, because each tray had multiple skeins in it so...you lay 2,3,4,5 skeins next to each other? Depending on technique and saturation point?

@@NicoleFrostYarn I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear, I meant in the first 3 that you demonstrated- the bulls eye, the rainbow wedge and the pie wedge with the 3 blue shades. I hope that’s more clear, but I fear that it isn’t.
@NicoleFrostYarn
@NicoleFrostYarn 2 жыл бұрын
@@annbaker8748 I demonstrated dyeing in a pot, I don't do it for multi color colorways (only solid shade) because you can't get matching skeins in the round, no matter how carefully you place them. I cannot figure out what it is you're asking that's not clearly demonstrated. I put the skeins in the round wound in a circle so at least placement somewhat matches but they shift at the slightest tip of the pot and now you have overlapping skeins, white patches, colors that drift to one and not the other. I have never been asked how I put yarn in a pot. I put it in a pot. I don't film every instance of putting yarn in ANYTHING because a) completely obvious b) waste of time filming and editing c) if I put everything included in a video it would be 9 hours long and nobody would watch it because it would be boring and not a quick informative nugget of information. What on earth does "how do you put yarn in a pot" mean except- putting it in a pot. In the direction you want the color to flow. I spent 6 hours driving and my kids haven't seen my face in a day. Please excuse me while I go have dinner with them.

i know this video is a couple years old but i just have to SHOUT THANK YOU for understanding the connection between technique for dying versus knitting products. as a plus size designer/crocheter- so many pretty skeins disappoint when making a 25-30 inch width. i loved all your information and attention to detail and your stance on clown/unicorn/vomit/poop/etc. some dyers are bonkers throwing everything in a pot and calling it 'art'. thanks again.

Love how you know your color wheel. A lot of folks that I watch just throw the color on, not knowing what the 2 colors will bring up on the opposite end of the color wheel. I am a crocheter and just started knitting. I would never have thought that the pretty skeins/hanks, would turn up so differently in a project when hooked or knitted up. That is super good to know. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your tutorials. I’m going to give this a try, but I have a few questions. You may have already replied but I can’t see it yet. Are there recipes for these colours or is this asking too much lol. (I meant is it a secret). 2. I keep watching people dying yarns but no one has answered this on. Where do people get the yarn base names? 3. How do you keep records for colour repeats? 4. Last but not least I’ll buy you a coffee, but where do I do this. Your videos are worth more than 1 cup of coffee but that’s about all I can afford right now. Having said this, I just turned 69 years young this year and yes i would love to give real acid dyes a proper go. No no not turning pro lol. Thanks fo all the answers. Congrats on your baby. As I’m a first time viewer may I ask when are you due and do you know what the sex is or do you want to know. Thanks.

1). Read the description below the video, I have the dye recipe listed. It's my own personal formula that yields super saturated colors with no bleed. 2). No fucking idea why dyers name their bases. Most dyers in the U.S. buy from wool2dye4 or Ashland Bay. The manufacturers of this yarn have named them (like, "sheila's sparkle" after the owner Sheila Trunzo, or Wilamette, which is a place in the state Ashland Bay is). But why, specifically, do dyers take already named bases and christen them something new? Couldn't tell you, I don't do it because it's always struck me as a cheap marketing gimmick. I think I'm not that romantic or whimsical of a dyer, I dislike even having to give my colorways names. 3). I don't keep records of my colorways. I don't do regular shop updates nor do I have colorways I repeatedly offer for sale, I'm more focused on teaching. Besides, after 11 years, I can look at a skein and know exactly what colors were used in what application style. 4. In the description is a link to the funding platform, website is www.ko-fi.com/frostyarn . Many thanks for investing in me & your fellow fiber artists who want to expand their dye knowledge. 5). Follow me on Instagram for more dye tutorials under hashtag #frostyarndyetutorial and I'm having a girl, Beatrix Charlotte, on July 9th.

Your videos are so instructional you are a really good teacher and (based on many of your videos) you have a real talent with color! I’ll vouch for what you said about the palindrome skeins. I got a very $$$ skein of “fusion” yarn: same dyes on 8 different yarn bases for texture interest. I realized later that the hanks all had basically 5 stripes of colors, evenly divided around the circles, with harsh borders. It was for a shawl:wtf? Ugly pooling. I solved it by winding 2 mini balls for each of the 8 yarns, and alternating constantly to keep the colors flowing nicely and not like a messed up circadian rhythm chart, zig zagging to oblivion. What a huge pain. And you’re right: I won’t buy from that person again.

@NicoleFrostYarn

The fiber content in lemon should must likely lend a sticky, clotted feel to the fiber, better to get white vinegar or order citric acid. Blueberries would yield only a minor stain, not lightfast or washfast. If you want to try dyeing but are more interested in natural dyes vs synthetic, check out www.dharmatrading.com and go to their dye section. Word of warning- natural dyes are significantly more expensive than synthetic and have a limited color range.

@@NicoleFrostYarn Oh my plans were to use white vinegar but it seems my boyfriend had used it up a year ago and never threw out the bottle... The yarn did only stain and its consistency is oddly wavy now...the cotton shirt that I was wearing did stain by accident a very lovely color. Depends on how much saturation I want, flipping and adding a second pass of dye is going to make for a more highly variegated yarn. I don't flip my solid shade tonals in the round.

I just stumbled upon your video & totally LOVE it, you are an extremely good teacher and very knowledgeable. THANK YOU so mu for sharing your knowledge. I am in Melbourne, Australia & the dyes that I predominantly use & are easily accessible for me are Landscape Dyes. My problem is that I don’t have (& can’t find) those large stainless steel baths/tubs that you use. Is there any other way that you would recommend in order to achieve similar results. 🙏💜

The trays are used by restaurants and caterers, so go to a restaurant supply company to find one. Ghe grocery store will have aluminum turkey roasters, but aluminum will react negatively with the dye. Stick with stainless steel. If you still can't get your hands on one, check out my video labeled "direct application and reverse speckle." Do them direct app on a streamer. Best of luck! Nic

Oh my goodness these are gorgeous! Beautiful work! I’ve never dyed yarn, but I enjoy watching everyone else. Would Borax help with the process? Just a thought for some reason. LoL.

My tap water is very hard and has chloramine.does that matter?
@NicoleFrostYarn

bonnie rush you’d have to do a side by side batch with your tap and distilled from the store. If there’s any difference in dye uptake, it’s your water. In which case, you’d want a filter installed or to mix your dye stock and dye bath with distilled

Watching this video again and learning what I missed before.I'm a purple lover, and I want purple and all shades of green together. So, in this low immersion, how do you keep the purple and green from smushing together to make muddy brown? If I can achieve this, I will be ecstatic! Many thanks for taking the time to teach us! You don't. This technique yields poor results mixing colors opposite each other on the color spectrum. Unless you like the 3rd brown color it produces. Or you leave a gap. Or you test every green and purple to find one that has a less heinous 3rd color. Or you add a tiny bit of blue as your buffer color.

@@NicoleFrostYarn @Nicole Frost thank you! The blue buffer sounds promising. Appreciate the help in this! Painting the yarn would lead to better results?

@@psdumas depends on the effect you want. Painting it gives you very little color variation as opposed to kettle dyeing. I don't know what kind of effect you're trying to produce in the yarn. You can always speckle one side with 3 purple dyes, spray with citric acid water to fix in place, flip, and do 3 greens on the back. Minimal white space or browning if you do it correctly.

@@NicoleFrostYarn I will be adventurous and try. I just saw a gorgeous skein here online of purple/sage green yarn. I am experimenting.Again, thanks. Your videos are fantastic to watch. Thanks for the clarity!
