I had a sudden urge two weeks ago to learn more about the 80 years war as i felt it could be a great inspiration to write fantasy. Then i found this channel and oh boy. I watched all 12 episodes and i must say this has to be one of the best history documentaries I've ever seen. I felt like watching a movie the entire time. As a foreign student living in the Netherlands I now see traces of this conflict everywhere in the city I live in and I undertsand why you guys love the colour orange so much haha. I just want to thank you for this mountain of fantastic work. Can't wait for part 3.

Thank you. I had a record those more than a few times. I kept blowing out the mic. 😆 Maurits' speech was a lot longer (he repeats a few things), but you get the gist. I've heard medievalists say that these pre-battle speeches were more of a myth, written after the fact, but considering Maurits rode up and down the ranks (and repeated his words), I think these speeches probably happened. But who knows...

I think I'm in my fourth run on the series, this episode is one of my favourites mostly because of the detailed battle which I believe we have never had in KZbin most of history channels skip a lot of stuff and recently I see a lot try to do introductions and reasons to why a battle happened which is good but nothing like this, I will never get tired of this series, and can't wait for new episodes.

At some point, every time you mentioned commander Vere, I kept hearing Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back saying to one of his generals: 'General Vere, prepare your men!' (although that guy's name is technically spelled 'Veers', but that is neither here nor there of course). I now think you actually even said something like 'general Vere prepares his men', but maybe I'm making that up. But I heard a lot of Darth Vader in my head this episode. Damn, this is good. The narration is just awesome. For those just following the main story: don't miss out on the blooper reels.
@larsdejong73962 жыл бұрын
Ok, I think Francis Vere has just become my favorite general. Fighting with all the skill and valor befitting a knight, despite being constantly backstabbed by his queen. And now, in one of the most intense battles of the whole war, defieing his own safety for the sake of his men. And here I was thinking Ernst Casimir was brave.

I think more than just being skilled and brave he adopted Maurits' way of war incredibly well and always carried out his assigned role on the battlefield as best as he could, never abandoning battleplans for personal glory. An incredibly competent general in what more and more starts to look like an all-star Dutch high command

I've always thought I knew quite a bit about the 80 Years War. Man was I wrong. Perhaps it is possible to learn more about how the farmers and the citizens have had to suffer. Families must have been torn apart with horrific starvation and disease. That there are still people left in the countryside for the harvest? Or was food imported at that time? Etc. For the first time in Ottoman history, the government enlisted groups of mercenaries who had deserted from the Habsburg camp. Even though this was extraordinary and not representative of a generalized trend, it demonstrates that the Ottoman government of the seventeenth century was far from being the reactionary and conservative organ that is still a commonly held conviction about its identity today."
