The only real "mistake" that Eisenhower made was not realizing, like Reagan did, that if we simply outspent the Soviets, they would collapse. Reagan had SSDI ("Star Wars" as the Democrats deridingly called it), to spend "too much" money on. I wonder what Ike could have "over spent" on, and beat them. Interesting hypothetical. Nikita Khrushchev himself admitted in his autobiography that if America outspent the Soviets on their military, the USSR would collapse.

Very good overview of the Eisenhower presidency, although there are a couple key items missing. One is the interstate highway system that pretty much every American uses today. Ike got the idea for this from two experiences. First, he went on a two-month long trip with a military convoy across the US in 1919 to test the viability of moving military troops by roads across the US. The second experience was seeing the German Autobahn during WW2 and recognized that that was how the Germans were able to quickly move troops from one front to another. The second major item missing is Ike's relations with Khrushchev and the cooling of tensions in the late 1950s, so much so that Khrushchev toured the US and met Ike at Camp David and was taken to Ike's farm at Gettysburg (the official National Park Service site for the Eisenhower's). Ike was then scheduled to visit the Soviet Union but little issue with a U-2 spy plane put an end to that before it began

In 1919 Ike was assigned to a an Army motorized convoy, travelling from D.C. to San Francisco, to test the U.S. road infrastructure. The convoy averaged 8 kilometers, 5 miles, per hour, and the travel was almost impossible! After this personal experience, and witnessing the Autobahn during the war, it's no surprise President Eisenhower championed the U.S. Interstate Highway System.

That's a good point, though I wish Ike would have been more supportive of rail transport. It was a time of decline for both freight and passenger rail.
@jamiengo2343
@jamiengo2343 3 жыл бұрын
@@larryhall2805 I think rail transport, whilst important, is more restrictive compared to trucks and cars. We saw this during the war when the army with the most trucks was able to move the quickest. Trains are more restrictive, you can only go from A to B and that’s it.
@larryhall2805
@larryhall2805 3 жыл бұрын
@@jamiengo2343 Yes, that is true, Jamie. Yet, I believe as a country we would have been better off with BOTH our Interstate roads & maintaining our rail options. Road transport is, as you stated, more flexible, where as rail transport more efficient. With the intermodal aspect seen today we are experiencing a good hybred. However, our urban traffic problems are horrendous! They're polluting, time wasting and grossly inefficient. I believe our rail capacity can do much to relieve this problem.

My Dad was a veteran of the European Theatre (Hq&Hq Sqdn, 8th USAAF). In 1952, he would have voted for Eisenhower for God if he ran. Unfortunately, he died in August, so he didn't have the chance. When Ike died, I lived in Topeka, KS. They brought him home to Abilene on a train. It passed through Topeka at about 2AM. Despite the hour, and the cold temperatures, there were two or three hundred people on the platform to honour him. We were all standing round, drinking coffee, smoking, and chatting. When the train came into sight, silence fell. Men came to attention and removed their hats. Everyone stood silent as the train rolled through. Probably my most poignant memory was a cartoon that I think Bill Mauldin did. It was a 'Flanders Field' of veterans' graves. Over the crosses a whisper was shown, 'Pass the word, it's Ike himself'.

This idea that Ike won the 1952 Republican nomination without much active intervention from him (your clear implication) is laughable. Remember Senator Robert Taft? He came to the convention with 600 delegates while Eisenhower had ~400 ,the Ike forces forced through the Fair Play amendment (an ironic name) which disqualified numerous Taft delegates and added Eisenhower ones. This defeat is very significant because Eisenhower felt that Taft (who was more an isolationist) would ruin our international standing. So Ike did not just sit and wait for the people to come to him he actively campaigned to defeat Taft and get the nomination in 1952

@ 10:25 The vid says: US aid to the French was blocked by Congress contributing to the French defeat (Dien Bien Phu) in 1954? Nope! In 1951 Truman authorizes $15,000,000 for French forces in Vietnam. Also 1951 The MAAG (Military Advisory Assistance Group) is created in Saigon to coordinate aid to the French. In1953 Ike sends 150,000 tons of equipment to the French. In 1954 Just the USAF alone gave 140 F6F and F8F fighters, 41 B26 bombers, 27 C47 transports, maintenance assist, and bombs. Trucks, ammunition, and training came through the army. When France lost at Dien Bien Phu it was French soldiers + predominantly American equipment.

My old GC, Tom Cobb, once worked in the motor pool at Lowry AFB. If I recall correctly in 1959, Eisenhower was in the area and the presidential limousine broke down at Lowry. Tom spent most of the night and the next morning scraping up the parts needed, and repairing the car so Eisenhower wouldn't be late for his next stop. After the tour had ended, Ike returned to Lowry to meet the "wrench" who saved his ass, even offered Tom a medal. Tom politely refused and shook his hand. "Sir? I was only doing my job."

In the partition of the Indian subcontinent, the British outmaneavour the Americans and bought about an earlier British exit than even the people of India expected. Yankee traders were banned from Indian subcontinent since 1814. After WW2, the Americans demanded equal parity with Empire Preference in India. @@axelpatrickb.pingol3228 Yeah I don't like the coups either but, if you consider them and the USSR and China's literal concentration camps, occupations, mass executions and the everlasting state police trying to destroy your life-heck they would even kill people who didn't do anything against their party(communist one that is) so that the rest would fall in order-I am a Czech(former socialist republic of Czechoslovakia) and I would happily escape to the USA from my country, which was a literal nightmare at this time in the history...so what I am trying to say that there are worse things than foreign coups, but that doesn't change the fact that they are bad.

@@krystalcz9251 You do know it was in the Eisenhower Presidency that Hungary threw off the Soviets and asked the US for help... And the US did nothing...

@@axelpatrickb.pingol3228 USA did considered to intervene but decided not to. They feared a nuclear warfare breaking out and for intent and purpose, they were right to be anxious.

IKE would be labelled as a "communist" by modern Republicans. Hell, they call a neoliberal like Obama communist, just imagine what they'd call Eisenhower.

that speech Eisenhower made about the MIC as he was almost out the door is ironic to say the least..where was this concern about all this influence from the MIC before? Not sure why people cant see that speech for the BS it was.. even to this day, people consider it a great speech.. I do not however and consider it a hypocritical speech at best..
