I am so glad you took the time to publish this video. I own that very same model and started having loose keys (after more than 20 years of good use), so you are my savior here!

I use a Technics digital piano (the same model as in the tutorial) for tutees who prefer digital over an acoustic piano. Being 34 years old my model is relatively ancient and occasionally keys fail to sound. I have to dig deeper than in this video to clean contacts with alcohol but your video first gave me the courage to delve into the inner workings of a digital piano. Thank you for an excellent tutorial.

I'd also like to thank you. I could take mine apart, but not back together. I was shocked that you have the exact same keyboard as myself. So, this was spot on. I didn't think I would find anything out there about this keyboard. I could not for the life of me figure out the springs. Thanks again. Great job. Loved it!

This was a really useful video and fixed my problems with the PX201. I managed to break a key but it still works fine, held in place by the spring. The only foot-note that I would is that the earth doesn't seem to exist on UK models as the earth most likely runs through the moulded plug. The other things I would stress are 1. Unplug first and wait a minute or two as charge can be held in the transformer. 2. Don't force any of the plastic parts. The do come apart easily once you move them in the right direction. If you are applying a lot of pressure, you are doing it wrong. 3. Electric screwdrivers really speed the job up. Thanks for making this video.

Thank you so much. i just got a used Technics Digital Piano. Some keys were not working properly. So after watching your great video I opened it. Found out that 2 keys were broken. I replaced them with the other keys on the farthest right. I know it is not the best option, but those keys are rarely used. I will eventually order new keys and replaces them. Found an old Canadian coin under another key that was making the metal noise when releasing the key. Thanks again for your video. It has helped so many people.

Very useful. I had to go beyond this to deal with a liquid spill. I lifted the front of the keyboard and sat it upright on its rear edge. Then I unscrewed a long metal plate and took the switch circuit board off. Then removed the rubber boot where the liquid had spilled. Will clean the contacts and see if it all goes back together ! Shame I cant attach pics.

I just can't believe it. This is my new favorite youtube video. I have never in my life seen anything explained as clearly and completely as this video. Just amazing. One question: My keys are not loose or stuck, but after we moved, now many of them CLICK whenever I press on them. Do you know what causes this? I assume when I open it I will see, I'm just wondering if you have experienced this. Thank you for this amazing video.

I have the same problem, clicky keys. Curious if opening it up revealed anything and if you found a solution?
@greg55666
@greg55666 7 жыл бұрын
+Katherine Code Hi Katherine. The good news is if you open up the piano you CAN fix the clicky keys. The problem is, this video doesn't address the problem at all. The good news is, I'm very proud to say we fixed our clicky keys, and it's so awesome, I can play it now without the constant clicking, I love it and it's totally worth it. But it is way more involved than what he shows here. At no point was anything difficult or were we worried that we would break something, so I say you should try it, but you have to take the keyboard all the way out of the cabinet, so it seems like you're messing with it a lot more. What is causing the clicking is unfortunately simple wear and tear. There is a thick piece of felt along the bottom of the keys. Over time, that felt gets squished down, so it is no longer holding the keys away from the bottom of the frame, so when you release a key, it taps the metal. What we had to do was buy a piece of felt from Michaels, cut it into strips about 1/4" or 1/2" wide, and insert it on the bottom ledge of the keyboard frame where the keys are tapping. To do this, follow all the instructions in the video until you have the keyboard unscrewed and loose in the cabinet. Do not remove any individual keys like in the video, that is not necessary. The difficult thing is that you have to remove the entire keyboard from the cabinet in order to access the underneath. The scary part is you have to disconnect the wires that go from the keyboard to the cabinet (the ones that the guy in the video said he didn't want to mess with). As you can see in the video, all the wires are tied down with giant bread-bag ties. Take a lot of pictures with your phone so you can put things back how they were. (It is actually easy to get everything back together, but it will seem intimidating when you are taking them apart.) After the wires are untied from the frame, then you have to disconnect them from the frame. The only delicate part is unplugging the ribbon wires from the circuit board. This is very tight, so you have to just slowly work it back and forth. It will come loose; don't force it, just work it back and forth. Then there is another small wire that leads to the power switch, and I think one more. When you get the wires all disconnected, then you can lift the keyboard out of the cabinet. Here again, go slow and don't force anything. It comes right out, but it's really heavy, so it will take you a minute to determine how to lift it out. (As I said, this is much more difficult than the repair in the video. It can be done without any trouble, but you have to be brave and careful.) When you and your friend have the keyboard out of the cabinet, put it on a table with one end hanging off the edge. If you get under the keyboard and look up at the bottom of the keys, you'll be able to see where they are clicking. There is a small metal ledge that runs the length of the keyboard. Keep hitting a clicking key and you'll be able to see what I'm talking about. The piece of felt that is supposed to be catching the key has worn down so there's a deep indentation, and it is allowing the metal part of the key to hit against the metal ledge. You need to put a strip of felt along that lip. At Michael's, get a few different kinds, you want it to be as thick as possible without interfering with the keys. (If it's too thick, it prevents the key from coming all the way back up.) We used rubber cement to just lightly anchor the felt to the metal. Then we had the felt cut into about one-foot strips. I got down on the floor and dabbed the cement onto the strip in three or four places, then my friend pushed down all the keys for about an octave at once, and I slid the felt into place. Then she let up on the keys, and that was it! You can bang away at the keys and NO CLICKING! One last thing--you can do the ends of the keyboard this way, but not the middle. For the middle, we placed the keyboard between two chairs, so the middle section was in the air, then I got on the floor underneath it to place the felt for the middle keys. That is it. Then reverse the steps to put the keyboard back. The hardest step is sliding it into the cabinet because it is heavy and the fit is tight. Just be careful. Once you have it back in the cabinet, the rest is easy, reconnecting the wires, tying the wires down, then screw in the screws on the bottom that hold the keyboard in place, then follow the video. The one thing that troubled us was, when we put it back together, it seemed like there was a gap between the cabinet and the control panel. Before you do anything, take a hundred pictures of everything, because I figured out that gap was there before (you always run your finger along it to get out the dust, but there's always some extra in the gap). So everything went together perfectly, and you won't believe you're actually going to be able to play your piano again without the clicking. It is SOOOOOOO great. So, this is involved but you can do it. The clicking on mine got so bad, we made the decision before we opened it that we were ready to get a new piano if this didn't work, but it DID work, and now I have no reason to get a new one. You will be super proud of yourself if you try this. Please let me know if you have any questions! I will be more than happy to help you out however I can. I'm so proud of what I accomplished, I'm happy to spread the knowledge. :) Good luck!
@KatherineCode
@KatherineCode 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the detailed reply, greg! After more sleuthing around online I pretty much came to two conclusions: that the clicking likely IS due to worn-out felt (the piano is over 20 years old!) and that I'll need to take it apart to check for sure and see if there's something else as well. Have been trying to find out where I can get the correct replacement felt before dismantling the instrument, so your tip about Michaels and cement glue is super handy. A friend has already volunteered to help, and after reading your advice, it looks like I'll need to take him up on it, even if he thinks putting grease BETWEEN the keys is a good idea. Hopefully my music will be click-free in the very near future!! Thanks again, your knowledge is of great help! ☺
@greg55666
@greg55666 7 жыл бұрын
+Katherine Code I hope it works out. One detail--I'm not talking about _replacing_ the worn out felt. Rather what we did is put a new piece of felt in a different place, where the clicking is actually happening. The worn out felt is letting the key go down too far, so it's hitting the metallic ledge. You'll see what I mean if you open it up. (Replacing the worn out felt would be difficult because it's very thick, it would be difficult to find outside of a piano-parts warehouse, I think.)
@KatherineCode
@KatherineCode 7 жыл бұрын
Ooh, that's a good detail to know! Thank you! One video I watched showed replacing the felt (on a different make/model), and it took them over half an hour to remove the old felt with an exacto knife and some needle-nose pliers. Your method sounds much better!

Thanks a lot for your video, I had exactly the same problem! I couldn't find the parts for sale, so instead I had them 3D printed, using the file that someone submitted on www.thingiverse.com/thing:3872069/apps . They were a bit too small compared to the originals (maybe ¼ of a mm, not sure exactly), but they fit with the help of gentle hammer taps. Because they weren't quite wide enough, the keys still wiggle just a little bit but it's a great improvement over that clacking sound they made before. It surely is possible to scale the model in the file to compensate.

Thank you for an excellent video. I was wondering if there was a way to contact you to ask for some advice. Im interested in building an extended keyboard, one with 108 keys and was hoping someone might be able to help me. I live in Hannover, (können auch Deutsch sprechen), and I have an existing Kawai mp9500 and want to extend either end (bass to go down to the c (extra 9 notes) and up to the b (extra 11). I'm considering to buy another mp9500 for this purpose. there is a contact on my website www.ashleyhribar.com where I can be contacted as well as here. I look forward to hearing form you! Ashley

@ Ashley Hribar Hallo! I am not German but if you bare with me, I may or may not be able to help! I used to have a Kawai MP9500, and MP8 which I sold. I still have the wooden keyboard mechanism for the MP9000/9500 which I had planned on using to build a custom baby grand electronic computer controlled workstation piano. I need to know exactly what it is you are trying to do? There are ways to do it BUT the electronic contact board designs on the Kawai will NOT allow it! It has a key scan IC chip ON the contact board itself as well as an additional circuit ic chip on the motherboard. I do NOT intend on keeping my contact boards for the keybed as I do not need them for my project but this may be of interest to you IF you still want to try to hack your MP9500? I looked at this Technics keys video and say to myself, I am glad I love WOOD KEYS!! Plastic keys suck! Anyway, check pianokeyjoe and find me! I am pianokeyjoe for a good reason!!

Can you not put your camera on a tripod and stop the shaking? It makes it really hard to watch and very annoying. It is so amateurish.
