2B Umpire Dan Iassogna ejected Nationals manager Dave Martinez for arguing an obstruction (type 2) call by 3B Umpire John Bacon that allowed Phillies runner JT Realmuto to score from second. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2022/...
In this video were tmac takes the lead, we review the play and conclude that the proper call here likely is offensive interference for the runner impeding the fielder's ability to make a play on a batted ball (the rule is "attempting to field a batted ball"-not "successfully fields" or "could possibly field a batted ball"); the collision occurs prior to the ball arriving at the fielder's location, or even with the fielder's location, which means the runner interfered with the fielder before the fielder had a change to unsuccessfully attempt to field the ball.
Had the ball already arrived and the fielder had already unsuccessfully attempted to field it, and THEN a hindering contact happened between the two players, it would instead by obstruction (type 2), as ruled on the field here, as the fielder would no longer be in the act of attempting to field a batted ball.

I'm in a weird position: I think Iassogna was right to rule it obstruction. The fielder had no realistic play, and may have even been deliberately getting in the way. But I don't think the runner had a realistic chance of getting home safely, and the rule is to nullify the obstruction rather than penalize it. Give him third, and play ball.

Looking at the video at 1:16 before the collision, the fielder had a good reaction and angle and a decent chance to make that play. Still, it's a tough call for the umpire, and he had to make a call. Before the hit, the fielder's starting position in the runner's path is questionable and could justify the call.

I'm actually with Dan Iassogna on this one because to me, the critical point is: Did the fielder have a realistic chance of getting to the ball? If not, then let's take it farther: If a ball is hit down the third base line and the first baseman jumps in that direction (almost tackling the first-base runner in the process), should that be called interference by the runner? The fielder has an "opportunity" to make a play, but no realistic chance.

Two points in defense of Davey getting as mad at he did that weren't discussed in this video: 1) Hoskins wouldn't have been on base at all if not for a two strike pitch right down the middle that was called a ball. He later walked. 2) He got ejected while he was on his way back to the dugout. This can been seen from the camera angle of the Nationals broadcast. I listened to both radio broadcasts and tv and I was most impressed with Nats… they correctly called it obstruction. Most broadcasters don’t know the correct terminology. The fielder obstructed the runner’s pathway rather than Hoskins interfering with Garcia’s ability to field it. It was a gutsy but good call in my opinion. Garcia had no shot . He obstructed Hoskins pathway . 3rd base coach must of seen umps obstruction signal and was smart sending him home, brilliant. Obstruction is a delayed signal. Runner’s interference is immediately called and kills the play at that time. I’m glad you asked😀 Drives me nuts that most broadcasters have no clue😅 Nevertheless, I don’t agree with your perspective on this play nevertheless I do respect it and love your channel 👍it would be nice if MLB came out with their professional analysis. If the runner runs behind the SS when he gets the ball and the SS would try to tag him, the runner could be called for being out of the base path but yet, he really has no choice because the two defensive players are in the base oath. Davey has a case for Rhys not being awarded home but he is definitely in the wrong about interference with the runner. He's been around baseball long enough that he should know that the fielders have to give the runner a path to the next base which Cesar clearly doesn't allow to happen by standing right in the Rhys' path when the play starts. Cesar is literally in Hoskins shadow when the ball passes which clearly doesn't give Rhys any time to be able to get out of the fielders way so that he can make any attempt at the ball. No, I would have ruled him out. If you rule it obstruction, it is type 2 obstruction in this case, so there's no automatic base award, and the runner is only "protected" to the base that, in the judgement of the umpire, the runner would have reached without the obstruction. If the runner decides to run further than that, he's in jeopardy to be thrown out. Wow. It's bad when big league umpires miss a call (didn't see the interference). But it's worse when they miss a call so bad they make a call on the opposite team (calling interference obstruction). But it's maybe one of the worst possible calls when they miss a call so bad they make a call on the opposite team AND give an undeserved run to that team (they did not have to, and shouldn't have, awarded home to R2). This is the equivalent in football to missing a pass interference, then the ball touches the ground before the defensive back catches it, but calling it a catch (interception), and then someone touches that defensive back while they're on the ground but you don't end the play, and that defensive back runs for a touchdown. Bad, to worse, to worst. Dare I say it, but a recreational ump that saw this play, froze (be honest, most of us would have), did nothing, and just allowed the pay to happen (and R2 would have stayed at 3rd), would have been twice as correct as this 4 man MLB crew.

I'm not sure how it can be "interference" when the fielder begins the play in the baseline. What is the runner supposed to do? If the fielder fields the ball cleanly and goes for a tag and the runner tries to avoid the tag, the runner will be called out for "out of baseline." I can see the argument for not awarding him home, but it's a judgement call same as if a ball is thrown into the seats. However, the argument made about "he's knocked out of the line 10 feet and thrown out by a mile..." well, he was knocked nearly off his feet and his momentum killed. So it's impossible to say how close it would've been at the plate. If only there was a system in place where the umpires could've come together, watched a video replay from all angles, and then made a decision about how the play should've been called...
@tu6202
@tu6202 2 жыл бұрын
Where exactly is the baseline between 2nd and 3rd? The runner creates a BASE PATH during play which means there is no actual BASELINE established. In this situation, the runner should have been a step or two deeper than the fielder as it is his responsibility to avoid the fielder causing interference. Additionally (I know it did not happen on this play, this is an example), if the ball hits the runner prior to getting to the fielder , runner is out. If the ball is past the fielder and hits the runner, provided the runner is struck unintentionally, no penalty is given. To me this is a case of poor base running and awareness but he got away with it on a bad obstruction call by the umpires. The fielder has a right to try to field the ball.

This is not the difficult call everyone is making it to be, The fielder is clearly trying to make a play on the ball and even the most basic knowledge of the rulebook would know how to make the right call here. Then the play is magnified by the ump with the wrong view making the call, refusing to get together with the other umps, and the kicker, throwing the manager out *AFTER* he had said his piece and was walking away. Clearly (imo) Martinez said something that was accurate and cut to the umps ego and he threw him out out of an emotional reaction a few seconds later. Something needs to be done about MLB umpiring and accountability. This literally cost the Nationals a potential win (and gave Philly one in what might be a tight NL East/WC race) and seemingly only comes from not knowing the rulebook. The same thing happened to the Nationals a few years ago in the Playoffs against the Chicago Cubs where the umps didn’t know the rule regarding interfering with the catchers throw (hit by the bat on the follow through) and Dusty Baker literally talked to the umps about what the rule was, they said they saw it the same as him but said he was wrong about the rule when in fact he was right (Joe Torre admitted such later). It literally made the wrong team move forward in the playoffs and cost Dusty Baker his job. These are basic rules that umpires should know and it seems like they think they’re athletes and worry more about moving from a 92.8 to a 92.9% accuracy rate rather than making sure they are aware of the rulebook through and through. They think they’re a part of the game rather than neutral arbiters and i hate it so much.

I say that this play should be voided and replayed from this point. @andreasgottlieb2758

Totally wrong on the last part. There are two types of obstruction. Type 1, when there's a play being made on the obstructed runner, which results in a dead ball and the obstructed runner will be awarded the next base after the last base legally occupied. That would only be 3rd base in this case. But it doesn't really matter, because in this case we don't have type 1 obstruction, but rather type 2 obstruction. Type 2 obstruction happens, when there's no play being made on the obstructed runner (as in this case) and results in a delayed dead ball. After all plays have stopped it is then to the umpires to judge what would have happened without the obstruction and potentially award based. Important word here is potentially, because base awards aren't for sure in type 2 obstruction. Also the obstructed runner isn't immune to be thrown out. If the runner is thrown out by a larger margin than what the obstruction had cost him, he can and will still be called out. In this case calling the runner safe at home was the wrong call in my judgment. The obstruction did cost him some time, but seeing how early the throw from F8 arrived at F2 I really don't think the runner would have made it home, even without the obstruction.
