That is WAAAY more involved than the Funnyplaying IPS displays. I'm still a novice, and I think that is a little beyond me for now, but I agree that there is something magical about the OG display.

6:49 Quick hack. When you have both layers up, wedge something like a credit card underneath and move it around while pushing slowly. When you do it like that, there is also little risk at breaking the glas because of too much pressure. You just have to remove some glue afterwards. I just did this for the first time following your tutorial. Now the cleaning and soldering begins. Thanks for that!

Thanks! That was a good guide. It brought back traumatic memories of doing my own. Lifting the pins was a pain in the .. and the sticky polarizer was impossible to install without a bit of dust and bubbles. Not really noticeable when it is on though. I believe the early DMG models all had Phillips and not tri-wing, maybe the first year or so. I have one, seems to be identical in other ways though. I like the DMG, they have a certain charm you don't get with a modern display. 10-year-old me would have been in heaven with a backlit screen!

I did this one a couple years ago on my original gameboy and loved it, but some games it still doesnt have the clarity I'd like so I'm going to do an ips. Actually just emailed funnyplaying yesterday and theyre working on a laminated ips kit for the DMG (and have been for the best part of a year at least), so if anyone is considering an ips I'd wait for that kit to come out and see how it compares to the current ones available.

I don’t think it’s necessary. But if you want to put it back, idk use double sided tape. That’s how it was originally put on there

I have the possibility to get 7 pockets for 150. All of them needs fixing in some way, and thinking about doing it and mod them all in some way, and try to make some money on them. What would be your choice when it comes to the pockets? Mostly screen problems.

How would you recommend gaining some beginner experience with soldering for someone who’s trying to get into retro game mods?
@JakeSimmons Жыл бұрын
I recommend buying a DS lite with a broken hinge or top screen and trying a macro mod. It’s only a few simple steps and really cheap if you break anything. Plus with the resistor being so small to solder on, if you can do that, you can do most basic mods
@Teknakill Жыл бұрын
I'll stick to my old school green tea, rather than modern mountain dew, but still good to know how this is considered a "simple mod". Also just buy one used, save your time.

Is this somehow doable for the original GBA as well? Or is it a different type of screen and it's impossible? Because most of videos are about replacing the whole screen with some IPS or TFT and just a handful about adding some front light

This one definitely drained some of my confidence with modding, thought id give it a go since i was planning an IPS swap anyway and had 2 disposable screens with horizontal lines, the side ribbon cable pulled away from the screen on the first attempt and the second attempt the screen bled, safe to say this looked alot simpler than it actually is 😂, awesome video though bro!

Cool, what brand is your spudger? If it's not branded like iFixit, what keyword did you use to find it if it's ok to ask? I highly recommend: using rechargeable lithium AA 1.5v batteries if you don't want the look of the rechargeable lithium battery pack for the vertical form factor Game Boys. By the way could you use 99.99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the gunk after removing the reflector? God bless us modders/
