Video diary on this unusual find. I've seen this radio in a local antique shop a few times and avoided but then I gave in as fairly cheap. I thought it was a bit unusual to see a set with BC on and realised it must be for the American market. I was puzzled as EKCO was a British manufacture. I assume this radio is more Japanese made though. No visible model number is very puzzling. Filmed during lockdown 2.0. Has a strange fault still so may be a part 2! Nice to hear the improvement in output. The first radio I took to pieces used a battery tube.

Hi Darren, the radio may been made in Japan by Aiwa, as it bears some cosmetic similarities to the Aiwa-made Packard Bell AR-851 (of Gilligan's Island, 1963 fame).

An interesting little set that. I have a small plastic Japanese AA5 radio with the civil defence markings but made for 240v... There must have been a reason for them being in the UK and it would be interesting to find out

Nice and fresh now and it sounds smashing :-D I've never seen one like that before, kenneth williams might of said :-D The scaling reminds me of the american pocket radios. Hopefully the solder will keep that control hardware solid, if it cracks over a few years try a bead of hot glue, i've found it handy for difficult to fix problems. I really do find it odd that a telescopic exists, the magnetic ferrite rod usually works fine on it's own. Ahh the crap-a-citors, never to be trusted. I like the real metal tuning capacitor, quality part.

Hi Daz, that's an odd one, certainly not made in Southend! Odd as well as the Ekco name would mean nothing to our cousins.

That's a good point as the name wouldn't mean much. Thanks Andrew.
