পর্যাপ্ত প্রক্রিয়াজাত চামড়া থাকার পরও এলডব্লিউজি'র সনদ না থাকায় রপ্তানি পণ্যে সেই চামড়া ব্যবহার করতে পারছে না বাংলাদেশ। পরিবেশ রক্ষার শর্তপূরণে অধিকাংশ প্রতিষ্ঠানকে চামড়া আমদানি করতে হচ্ছে। সেই চামড়ায় তৈরি পণ্য রপ্তানি হচ্ছে বিভিন্ন দেশে। অথচ হাতের মুঠোয় কাঁচামাল থাকার পরও প্রায় ৪৭ হাজার কোটি টাকার বিশ্ববাজারে ব্যাকবেঞ্চার হয়ে আছে বাংলাদেশ। সম্ভাবনাময় এই শিল্পের বাজার ধরতে সাভারে পরিবেশবান্ধব চামড়া শিল্প কারখানা স্থাপন করা হলেও বিশ্বমানের সিইটিপি নির্মাণ করা যায়নি।

একটা গরুর চামড়া ৩০০-৪০০ টাকা দাম। কিন্তু চামড়াজাত পণ্যের দাম আকাশছোঁয়া। আগে দেখতাম ২ হাজার টাকাতেও চামড়া বিক্রি হতো।
